IDT Audio on Vostro 3550

I have tried to use a line-in mike on my Vostro 3550 (Windows 7 Professional 64 bit) with Dragon Naturally Speaking v12. Dragon can't find the sound system. I have tried several things none of which works:

  1.  Disabled the Microphone Array and make mike line in the default.
  2. Tested the mike on the sound recorder - doesn't work
  3. tried 2 other mikes - didn't make any difference
  4. checked that the mikes worked on a desktop machine; they did.

Incidentally, the mikes and Dragon Naturally Speakling v12 work fine together on my desktop.

I'm wondering if it is a compatibility issue with Windows 7 64 bit and Dragon Naturally Spealking 12. My desktop is 32 bit and works.

If the mic is still not working in Sound Recorder there might be a hardware problem. If you have Dell Diagnostics audio tests on your laptop, run it until the mic tests comes up and it will test the mic. Or you can try Windows' mic test.

If the mic is working okay then the issue must be in Dragon. Perhaps they have FAQ's or a forum that can help.

Is the IDT HD audio driver installed?  If you just have the Windows native High Definition Audio Device driver installed your audio will work but not all features of the hardware, usually including the mic jack.

Thanks for responding. I deleted the driver and reinstalled new drivers from Dell support web site. The mic works - sort of - in Dragon Naturally Speaking, but the mic check wizard still can't find the sound card. Gandalf was never that inept.

Okay. I don't know anything about Dragon so am just trying to help get the mic to work in Sound Recorder. I'm going off line now -- will try to think of something tomorrow.
