IDT High Definition Audio CODEC problems at startup (annoying)

This is a long overdue post.

It started maybe around a year ago, just after my Dell warranty for my Studio 1735 laptop ran out. Everytime I either:

  • turn on my laptop; or
  • plug in and unplug earphones at the earphone jacks; or
  • sometimes when the laptop comes out of hibernation

there will be no audio on my laptop. Its not a major problem, because everytime this happens, I just go to device manager and disable / re-enable the "IDT HD Audio CODEC" entry and the sound works fine again. I can only do this if all programs that might potentially use sound (like web browsers or video players) is shut down. If it isn't shut down, then doing the disable / re-enable does not do anything (i.e still no audio).

I've been googling about this problem today (just because I had some time) but nothing came up similar to my problem.

I've tried "update driver" and it all comes up as fully up to date.

What can I do to stop this from happening; like I said its not a major problem, just annoying to keep doing it.. Any ideas?

Thanks again for reading, hope someone could help me on this issue.

I forgot to mention that the laptop is running Windows Vista Home SP2

Does it seem like the audio driver has stopped functioning entirely or does audio just stop coming out of the speakers. If so you might have a certain hardware problem that interferes with the switching software. Sometimes re-installing the audio driver resets the software. See the Headphone Jack FAQ (the section on models with HD audio) to see if you have the symptoms described there. This might not be the issue you are having -- it is just suspicious that it is associated with using the headphone jack.

Or the audio driver could be working but corrupted. In that case you should delete the driver files and download a fresh copy from your downloads page.

Another thought:

because you have Vista you have the potential of installing its generic HD audio driver. You could try doing that for diagnostic purposes, because if you have the same symptoms with both the generic and the IDT driver it is unlikely that the fault is with the IDT driver.

Hi Jimco

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried uninstalling the CODEC driver entry, and it seems to solve the issue of having no audio when I restart the laptop.

On the "delete the driver files" page you suggested, it says that I should expect Windows to detect and re-install this driver, but it didnt. There's no IDT entry on the device manager now, though the laptop speaker has audio.

However, when I plug in an earphone and unplug, audio (from the speakers) stop coming out again. What I did next was to disable/enable the next entry on the device manager (HD Audio Device) and that brought sound back to the speakers.

I don't have the symptoms described on the Headphone Jack FAQ.

I then proceeded to delete the driver files anyway and downloaded a fresh copy online. What I realised now is that the driver file I downloaded has a different name to the one on the laptop, which means that probably the IDT driver I've been using has been the wrong one.. So I did that and reinstalled, and now everything works perfectly! Thanks a bunch Jim, really appreciate it.

Best regards..
