If you are not using the current bios version released 7-31-08 found here
If that doesn't help call tech support or chat in and they will replace the ac adapter or system board.
Good luck.

Why do you keep "replacing" the battery? I never touch the battery, even though I work on plugged in most of the time.
Is that supposed to prolong battery life?

Heat and age will shorten battery life. Removing it when running plugged in, will spare it from the heat and therefore it will last longer.

My XPS M1730 came with an owners manual, which states the following:
For optimal computer performance and to help to preserve BIOS settings, operate your Dell portable computer with the main batter installed at all times.
That might explain the original problem with the computer not recognizings the battery or charger.
I operated my previous laptop, an Inpiron 9200, always or mostly plugged into current and that battery lasted 3 1/2 years.
