"Q A Z" keys are not working

Model: Inspiron 1100. 7 years old. Windows Home Edition provided by Dell

One fine day when I switch on my laptop, It could not detect my admin password login. Later I found it doesnot detect the key press "A". one of the letter in my password fall on 'A'.

Later I found Q ,A , Z , left Shift, capslock, Esc keys are not working.

I ran the diagnosis with a CD provided by dell before the booting process, to test keyboard, it asked me to press the highlighted key displayed on the screen.

1st it asked to press 'Esc' key, I tried & it didnt detect, I COULD not proceed with the test , Bcoz I was unable to proceed further. I could not even abort the test (to abort I ve to press Esc key twice). I just switched off the laptop forcefully.

Please suggest any workaround, so that I can log in & take backup, later I can give it for servicing.

You could replace the keyboard yourself its not normally too hard and theres often videos on youtube or other sites. You wont be touching the data on the hard disk so it wont matter. So if they say they are going to wipe the computer then they havent got a clue.  If you still want to make a backup and you cant get on you could try pulling the hard drive from the laptop and putting it in a usb enclosure then copying the info off on another computer. You could also use something like knoppix a linux based operating system that works from a cd and boots you in and then you can copy off to a memory stick or something.

Plenty of options for you.
