Hi GeoffVan,

The keyboard layout would have changed on your computer. Please follow the steps mentioned below to change it on your Windows 8 computer.

  1. The first thing we need to do is launch the Control Panel, you can do this by pressing the Win + R keyboard combination and type in ‘Control Panel’ and click on ‘OK’.
  2. Switch to the small icons view by selecting the drop down from the top right corner.
  3. Select the Language option.
  4. On the right-hand side you will see an ‘options’ hyperlink, click on it.
  5. ON the next screen you will be able to add and remove keyboard layouts.
  6. So add ‘US’ country under the ‘Input method’ section.

Also, please check is issue reoccurs with external USB keyboard connected.

In addition, please refer to the link below for disabling of the LOCK screen on your computer.

Thanks for this.  It worked in solving the keyboard problem but I am still struggling with the shutdown feature when it sleeps.  The tutorial you directed me to tells me to go to the Windows 8 Start Screen.  When I go there I get a screen that says :"getting started with windows" and appears about to download something although the message underneath is "pending".  Do I need to download something to proceed or is there some other way of accessing the Windows Start Screen?

thanks

Geoff

This doesn't solve the problem.  I have already marked the spot where it says it should not require a password when it wakes...saved it etc...and it is still requiring a password.

Also, navigating in is different than what you describe.  There is no "Change plan settings" option and no "Change advanced power settings" option.  There is, however, an option to a) require the password and b) not require it.  It was preset at a) but I have changed it to b) and saved the changes but it is still requiring a password.

Hi Geoff,

I would suggest you to update the BIOS and Video card driver on the system and then change the settings under power options. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section and Video card driver from Video section onto the system and install it.
