2407WFP brighter on one side than other :(

I noticed that when viewing a particular website the color is darker on the right than it is on the left and I'm sure the color is one throughout. It just seems brighter on the left than it does on the right but when I do a color test and fill the monitor with all black there doesn't seem to be any visible backlight. But if it isn't backlight that's making the left side brighter than the right, what is it?

This only happens on one particular color. All other colors this is not a problem.

Should I try to get it exchanged for another one?

Thanks.

Load an excel. Look at the left cells, compared to the ones on the right. Right side should be darker. This is a monitor construction flaw and probably has to do with unevenly distributed backlight. And is probably there on every 2407 pannel.

I have the A02 revision that has "fixed" the banding problem. Not the uneven backlight, not the heat on top of the monitor, not the banding in other than desktop modes, not the excesive contrast issue, not the contrast setting being disabled when in DVI mode.... All those issues, should be enough for an A03 free replacement!!

Still, if you are not in graphics business, it is nice to play and do general processing work with.

i have a 2007FPW with a similar problem. you probably read my thread about the yellowish color on the left thirds of the screen. it sounds like i have *might* have the same problem as you except it could be either my backlight or anti-glare screen. i got no definitive answer from anyone on the Dell forums or in their knowledge base so i'm lost. i'm still thinking whether i should exchange mine cuz it looks great during gaming, but the problem is noticeable during web browsing and graphics work.

i think if you feel the flaw is distracting, you should exchange it. there's really no need to keep something you're not happy with.

I have a 2007WFP. Is there some technical reason why contrast is disabled with the DVI input? Or is it a design flaw?

No design flaw, just the way it is on the LCD monitor.  Don't know why myself, perhaps someone from Dell does.

So it is not the way it is on LCD pannels.
And 2407 has too strong backlight, so in dim surrounding light, contrast would be essential, since reducing the only other remaining setting, would result in too many black areas.

Sorry 2407, but that is the way it is on my 15 inch, and 17 inch LCD from Dell, and using DVI cable and trying to use the Contrast Settings as Chade T asked.  It is blocked out....  He can use the graphic cards control panel to make some changes as other have reported doing when they had the same issue....

Also states this on the User Guide....

"  NOTE: AUTO ADJUST is only available when you are using the analog (VGA) connector ".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: When operating in DVI mode, the contrast adjustment is not available. This is stated in the User Guide for the 19 inch LCD

Look for the below heading for this information 2407

I was perfectly happy with my Dell 1900FP on DVI with a contrast setting.
So it is not the way it is on LCD pannels.

I received my monitor yesterday and waited all of 2 hours before i called and got a new one coming. The left side is 4 shades lighter than the right side. It looks horrible. Sadly after reading this board i realize that mine is one from china. I really hope that the new one is from Mexico so i dont have this problem. How many times could i have to return it if the new one is flawed as well ?

Maybe its time to dump all future purchases of the 2407 monitor.  I got a coupon today, and I can get the 2007 FPW for $ 352.00, which is less than what I bought this 17 inch for,but will give this much thought about its own downside.  Would be great if the monitors from Dell actually worked as advertised

This Eizo White Paper discusses LCD monitor Brightness and Contrast, and may shed some light on this:
However, if contrast ratio or RGB balance setting is changed on a monitor, its grayscale characteristics may also change. Contrast adjustment on a monitor involves the level adjustment of the input signals, and as a result, the number of grayscale tones will slightly decrease and its grayscale characteristics will be affected. This may be a reason why many monitors do not offer a contrast adjustment function.

Also, aren't the RGB adjustments for adjusting gray scale? I played Avia's color decoder test pattern and played around with the RGB controls and there wasn't much affect.

As far as I know, contrast and gray scale always affect each other....at least that's my understanding from my home theater display forrays. So that white paper is correct, but it doesn't explain why it can't be adjusted with the DVI input. Actually, brightness and contrast affect each other as well....with that line of reasoning manufacturers could try to argue that monitors don't need EITHER of those controls....and that would not be good.

I have the same problem, and it is really annoying when i play games, especially WoW, it looks like 30% of the left screen is much brighter and that isnt acceptable.
So it this "normal" or shall try to get a new screen ?

actually the one game i play the most is wow. i had said earlier in this thread that i waited all of two hours before i ordered the new monitor. the first monitor i had was CN prefix meaning it was from china. the new one i recieved has the prefix MX meaning it is from mexico. supposedly the ones from mexico are the new revision and have different panels. also the problem was supposed to be fixed in these models.

i can tell u first hand. its not. however it is drastically better. i would say on my first one it was 4 shades of grey lighter on the left side. on this new model i would say its only 1 shade lighter. however this is still unacceptable in my opinion. the problem is now up to dell not us. the community is begging for a Version 3.

will dell respond ?

we shall see.

All,

My advice is to contact Support and get it exchanged. Since monitors do not have a Service Tag number, you cannot use Email Support or Chat Support. Call in (1-800-624-9896) and provide the Order number.
