The Game Mode loads color settings ideal for most gaming applications where as the Standard Mode loads the monitor's default color settings. This is the default preset mode. I suggest you to set the preset mode to “Standard” for normal use and set it to “Game” only before playing a game on the computer. This will provide optimum settings and energy savings.

The different preset modes will configure the display settings to provide optimum picture with efficient energy savings. For example, the Movie mode adjusts the display settings that are optimized for viewing movies.

That much I knew.  I wanted to know how they change the display settings.  I've got an eye strain problem and I am pretty much stuck with the monitor on my desk at work so I was trying to find out what was the best way to work with the problem.

That doesn't answer my question.  I know how to find it in the menus.  I wanted to know how each of the different settings changes the display.

The monitor changes the brightness, contrast and color based on the vibrance of the image as per the preset modes providing a clear image. The more vibrant the image, the more is the energy used, and the more ordinary the image, the lesser the energy used. The monitor manages the different modes by throttling the power usage.

I was wondering if I could disable any of the presets so they don't turn on automatically when I play a video or game. When I play a windows media video file "wmv" and it switches to Movie Mode I find the picture to be hideous. The colors seem to blob together and somehow lose resolution. For the lack of the proper terminology it almost looks like an oil painting. I never noticed the loss of quality when playing games but I just recently exported a game I've been working on and I noticed in Game Mode the lighting is very low quality. When I play tested the game in the editor it looks fine because it was in Standard Mode but now once it is exported my computer recognizes that its a game. What I meant by the lighting is that the specular and normal maps look very bad (they pretty much just control how the lighting interacts with the shaders). After further fiddling around I really like the look of games when I change it to Movie Mode (which is odd because I dislike the Movie Mode when it's actually playing movies). Since changing it manually is a hassle is there any way I can change it to Movie Mode when I'm playing a game and Standard Mode when I'm playing a movie. I'm using the DELL S2740L by the way. Thanks.
