Thin white diagonal lines on P992 monitor

I am getting a series of thin white diagonal lines across my monitor, angling up to the right at about 5 degrees. They are not a problem on white screens, but are quite visible on dark ones. It is similar to the problem described here: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=53002&query.id=86415#M53002

Bill Levinson,

Do they appear in safemode or during the STFC (Self-Test Feature Check)?<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Yes, the lines appear when the monitor is disconnected from the computer. They do not match the description of the two damper wires.

A 20 digit alpha numeric number on the back of the monitor.

Bill Levinson,

The PPID shows the monitor is 5.4 years old. It is failing the STFC (Self-Test Feature Check). It is time to get another one.

Will the newest LCD and other flat panel monitors work with my computer? They are supposed to "plug and play" with Windows (I have XP). Are there any compatability issues I need to worry about?
