u2711 lost button functionality
Hi,
I have a u2711 which I have been extremely pleased with in terms of image quality, and thus written very positive reviews. I just love the quality of the display.
However, I discovered yesterday that I could not turn it on with the physical on/off button. Touching the touch-sensitive menu buttons brought it to life, though, but now there is a black rectangle stuck on it, displaying counters of power on hours and cycles. I cannot enter the menu, nor turn it off using the assigned on/off button. I can turn it off by touching one of the middle touch buttons. Apart from this, the display itself is in mint condition with not even the tiniest scratch. The monitor has not been moved at all since it was set up about a month ago.
If this is a known issue with a simple fix, I would be very grateful to learn about it. If not, please advise on how to proceed. I'm about to cry myself to sleep over the loss of such an awesome monitor...
Kind regards,
Tweak

If the distributor gave you a Dell Order number, contact Dell Norway Order Support and get the monitor exchanged. If they did not, you must go through them to get it exchanged.

I do not see a counter in the OSD Menu? It appears that you went into the Dell confidential factory menu and made changes? How did you get in there? Try this and see if it clears it -
* Switch the monitor off
* Disconnect all monitor cabling from the PC
* Disconnect the monitor power cord from the rear of the monitor
* Press and hold the monitor power button in for 5 seconds
* Reconnect the monitor power cord to the rear of the monitor
* Switch the monitor on
* The floating red/green/blue/white dialog box should appear on screen against a black background
* Switch the monitor off
* Reconnect the monitor to the PC and turn the monitor on

I will certainly give that list a whirl once I get home from work. As to your question of how the black box appeared on the display in the first place, I really don't know. I suspect it may have to do with one of my infinitely talented toddlers...
Anyway, for your reference, here is a picture of the reluctant box:

Factory menu makes sense if you look at it, and I will report back how your procedure went.
Thank you for your the help so far!

Well, it worked to some extent. The secret factory menu is no longer present on the screen, and I can switch it on by the acual power button. However, I still cannot switch it off with the usual button, and I cannot enter OSD menu. The usual blinking of the lowest touch-button is non-present.
I had such high hopes once I saw that the black box was gone. I did hold the power button for at least 30 seconds while completely unplugged. Any more ideas?

I paid premium for my monitor. No sale, no rebate or off ebay. Straight from a rather big distributor in Norway. I understand if you need time to figure out what steps I need to take next, but please don't be so shy that you can't tell me about it. I just want my brand new and expensive monitor to work as intended. As an update, the black factory menu box is back now. Apparently there to stay this time too.
