U3419W, USB randomly goes offline

Hi,

I recently purchased U3419W mostly for the USB-C feature to get rid of excess cables.

I connect my webcam (Logitech C920) to the back USB (non-power) port and my Logitech Unifying receiver on the side port in case I need to remove it quickly. My laptop is connected with the provided USB-C cable to the monitor.

Since Day 1 of purchase, I have noticed that whenever the video camera is turned on, the devices bounce in connectivity. This has become a pain on zoom meetings for work whenever I need to turn on the camera.

The firmware is upto date.

The problem is now solved for me. I can confirm the solution was the firmware upgrade to M3B112. Contact Dell technical support.

Have you tried plugging the camera into one of the USB ports on the side?  I have mine set up that way.  I have only used it a few times, but so far has worked as expected.

I rather keep the USB side ports empty so I can put flash drives and my yubikey on demand.

The whole reason for this monitor was to get rid of excess cables I had to use with my old U2414H. The USB hub on that one worked just fine and dandy.

One observation I have had is it doesnt have hiccups when video is off on zoom, as soon as I turn on video, it bounces and zoom ends up switching audio sources and my meeting gets interrupted when i'm speaking.

This is apart from the random times it decides to disconnect. Sometimes the display just turns off and I have to turn off and on again.

Hi,

I've also the same problems with another type 2720Q. I've another topic open on this discussion forum. The problem looks familiar.

You mentioned that you using an Yubikey. I also use an Yubikey 5 NFC. Is the Yubikey maybe the cause of our problems?

I use an Macbook Pro 13" with my screen.

I don't have it plugged in 24x7. I was commenting @catalogguy comment of moving the webcam to side port. I choose not to do it to keep one side USB port free for on-demand needs.

I know Macbooks are a pain point for Dell when it comes to USB-C, Dell themselves seem to redirect users to Apple forums.

I was working with Dell Customer support and they made me do a diagnostic test which involved unplugging everything. Once done, I plugged my laptop back, and BAM!!!, the USB devices started bouncing, interrupting my typing and constant alerts for default mic change for atleast 10 times. Had to unplug and plug it back in from my laptop.

I'm thinking they cable is of bad quality and getting a new one off amazon or something.

Whilst troubleshooting, I found that the monitor driver on Windows 10 shows as "Generic UPnP Monitor"

I had installed the DDM and figured that installed the drivers, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I kept the monitor plugged in and when running the official driver setup, it showed below all options and I installed the drivers and now it shows the model no.

Gonna keep an eye on it for the next week or so and report back.

Update:

Since updating the drivers, it has barely bounced randomly. But New issue: the display just goes blank randomly. I have to either use the custom shortcut on the button to "re-intitialize" the display or unplug and plug it back in or power on-off monitor.

But whilst on zoom, as soon as I turn on my webcam, it just bounces like crazy

I even got a new cable and the issue persists. @DELL-Cares

Some more trial and error I found that wether either one is connected to powered ports or not or both doesnt really matter.

Have you tried an other USB-C cable?

I'm going to try another cable. Irradiation on the cable may also cause weird interference on the USB bus.

It may be worth a try.

Did you solve your issue?

August 6th, 2020 16:00

I have a very similar issue. The rear USB ports regularly go offline, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes indefinitely. I tried the M3B112 firmware as well as the monitor drivers, but it did not solve the issue.

I also noticed that if the USB ports are not working, I can resolve it by going into Windows Device Manager and disabling and re-enabling the "Generic USB Hub" device that is in there. But the issue will occur again within a day.

My current workaround is to plug my devices (Razer Mamba Wireless receiver, Logitech C920 webcam) into the side USB ports. This is however quite annoying, since 1) I'd rather leave those ports free for other devices, and 2) I'm effectively limited to only 2 ports on this monitor. Thankfully my keyboard is bluetooth.

My setup is a Razer Blade Stealth notebook, plugged into the monitor via a single USB-C cable (the cable that came with the monitor).

My next attempt at a workaround will be to also plug the computer into its own power charger. But that mostly defeats the purpose of me getting this monitor, which was to have everything running over a single USBC cable.

I'm suffering from USB bouncing on all ports. It recovers after 3s and occurs roughly twice per day.

Lenovo X1 laptop connected via USB-C.  Logitech C920 webcam + Ergodox keyboard connected to rear USB.

Updated firmware and Win 10 drivers.

Next step is to experiment by disabling auto source selection and set USB-C as the upstream port for all inputs in Dell Display Manager.  Will report back.

The USB bouncing problem appears to be fixed for me now.  I made four changes simultaneously so don't know the root cause yet.

- Removed my Logitech wireless transmitter.  It's now attached direct to the laptop.

- Relocated the C920 webcam to use the side unpowered USB-A port instead of the rear powered port.

- Updated firmware to M3B112 (not publicly available)

- Changed monitor KVM setting to have all Input Sources use USB-C as the USB selection.  Disabled auto-input-source selection because I only use USB-C.

I will continue to investigate to see which change made the difference.
