Which video card works with 2007WFP?

Hi,

I just got my 2007WFP a couple of days ago, but it looks like my video card can't support 1680x1050 resolution. Can anybody suggest a few video cards that work with this monitor? I'm not a gamer and my computer is fairly old. The only other thing I'm looking for in the video card is to be able to support dual monitors.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get this monitor working at the optimum resolution.

Thanks,
Alex

Double check that you've installed the monitor driver to get the resolution selectable. If it's still not there after that then the vid card is too old :smileytongue:

Any modern card should support it even at the budget end, like an old X300 (ATI) or 6200 (nVidia) you could probably pickup very cheaply.

Agreed. I've got an ATI X800XL card - no problems there. The card is avail. for as low as $100 in many places. Just make sure though that whatever 'new' card you get is compatible with your video card slot ie. whether you have PCI Express graphic slots (unlikely if your computer is old) or AGP, etc.

What video card do you have and are you running the newest drivers?

Any recent ATI or Nvidia will support dual monitors over DVI and VGA. You can also get dual DVI cards easily now.

Are you sure that a Nvidia 6200 graphics card would work for the widescreen 2007?  I just found out tonight that my video card wouldn't work (geforce fx 5200 ultra) and have to get a new one too if I want to keep the monitor.

The info I just pulled up on the 6200 Nvidia card says it has to have a DVI-I compatible monitor.  The DVI on the monitor says 'DVI D'.  Is DVI universal, or...?

Any thoughts?  I'd prefer to stick with Nvidia...

My INTEGRATED INTEL graphics are able to support 1680x1050. Anyone with an Nvidia product, or an ATI product, will be able to. All you need is to find the proper drivers for your card, it's that simple.

Unfortunately I've found that to not be true.  I downloaded the latest nvidia drivers for my Geforce FX 5200 Ultra card and the DVI cable still doesn't work.  I called Nvidia tech support and they said that the max resolution that my card will allow for is 1600x1200, so it will not support the wide screen 2007wfp.

Thanks everyone for posting. The computer is DELL Dimension purchased in late 90s. The graphics card it has is 3dfx Voodoo3 so I don't think I'm going to find updated drivers :) I did install monitor's drivers but that didn't help. The PC has PCI and AGP ports.  ATI X800XL seems to be PCI-Express only.

I'm interested to hear from people which graphics cards they actually have working with this monitor that's PCI or AGP and less than $120.

Thanks,
Alex

The FX5200 shipped with 350mhz DACs that aren't quite strong enough to drive higher resolutions. Virtually any card with 400mhz DACs will drive resolutions up to 1920x1200 with no issues, higher than that I usually recomend dual link DVI (and it is often required).

No you can get them in AGP too. I think the 6800GS is cheaper though (also in both PCI-E and AGP).

Reneesong,
I replied in your thread, but may as well repeat here:

I'm using an FX5200 with my 2007WFP - it supports 1680x1050 (and probably more). However, I have problems displaying fullscreen video over DVI. I haven't figured out what the cause is.

BTW,
1600 x 1200 = 1,920,000px
1680 x 1050 = 1,764,000px

gpro - when you say that you can't get your's to work in DVI, will it work at 1680x1050 in VGA mode?  And when you change the monitor to DVI, it won't display at all?  That's what's going on with mine.

Both Dell & BFG rep's told me that it'll work in VGA mode, but not in DVI mode (even tho Nvidia told me it would support it in DVI).  Do you have just the 5200 or the 5200 ultra?  Dunno if that would make the difference or not, mine is the ultra.

Either way, I bought a new video card last night (e-Geforce 6200 256mb agp fanless, but bought a fan to go with it in the pci slot) - after rebate it'll only cost $40.  So I'm hoping to hook it up today and see just how bad dvi banding is.  I think I just noticed my first stuck/swimming pixels (at least 3) on the monitor today too.  But I guess that's just part of lcd's from what I've read.

The problem is exactly what I stated, the DAC on the DVI connector is underpowered.

Reneesong,
when I display fullscreen video the picture gets distorted by horizontal lines - a bit like a comb. it doesn't cover the whole screen, but appears at the left side and where there are color edges in the picture. If I reduce the size of the video window a little less than fullscreen. it's OK. Normal desktop use over DVI is OK, & no problems with fullscreen video over VGA. I am talking about 1680 x 1050 in all cases.

I know these cards have very poor DVI compliance ( ExtremeTech DVI Compliance Shootout), also I have the EP model which only has a 64 bit memory bus, and I think a slower GPU, so I guess I'm just pushing the limitation of the card.

If you are getting no picture at all you may need to check your full screen video options in the Forceware control panel. (I realize you have a new card now - I'm planning to upgrade mine too).

I'm not sure how Digital to Analog Conversion comes into it. Maybe you're referring to the DVI transmitter, or the underpowered GPU.

Yea, I mis-spoke, the TDMI is weak on those cards (and is often compensated for with more powerful DACs on the D-Sub side), but the GPU has plenty of power to drive 1680x1050 for 2D images.
