I've got two computers with the same problem. One is an Inspiron 1545 with vista home basic. The other is a Costco (not sure of the number off the top of my head) with windows 7. In safe mode I am connected to the network but not the Internet. I'm getting the same message dns lookup failed. Just like when it was started normally.
Start, control panel, network and sharing center, click on your connection, properties. Look for TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6 and click on properties for each. Have your settings match mine.
Can you run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here. What virus program and firewall are you using?
Hi, all my entries are the same regarding dns and ip. I can't post the ipconfig as I'm away from home and have no cords to connect to the Internet nor a USB drive to transfer the info over to a computer that connects to the wifi. Is there something specific in the ipconfig you were looking for? As for firewall and antivirus it's avg. we are leaving today. Hopefully I'll be able to connect at home. Last time I went home my computer was then messed up at home. Can we leave this thread open for a couple of weeks? I will be back at my families house then. I can come back with a cord to connect directly to the modem and then post the ipconfig. If my computer doesn't work at home, I'll be back on tonight. Thanks!
I'll give you a list of things to look at and try.
This is the first simple thing to try. (hint: an ip adress of 169.254 is the router(s) not communicating) Power cycling the router(s) should help.
===========================
Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)
Follow this step by step and go past the line that says stop here unless instructed. This will help you remove the adapter, then reinstall it. You may have to download the drivers to a flash drive, or burn them on a CD/DVD from another computer. Actually, the computer should connect with the ethernet cable.

Hi kanniballi,
May I know the system model and the Operating system installed on the computer?
Check if the Wireless works in Safemode with networking. Restart the computer and tap F8 at Dell logo. Select Safemode with networking.
Refer the following link which has settings for wireless internet:

Awaiting your response!

kanniballi,

Restart the computer and try to connect.
What happens?
============================
I use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.
Here is an step by step article that should help with your connection. Setting up/Troubleshooting a Wireless Network
Follow this step by step and go past the line that says stop here unless instructed. This will help you remove the adapter, then reinstall it. You may have to download the drivers to a flash drive, or burn them on a CD/DVD from another computer. Actually, the computer should connect with the ethernet cable.

How to repair a connection

This should get you working, unless you can only connect in the same room as the wireless router, then the antenna wire(s) may have come loose.
