ETHERNET CARD, i think

ok, so i have read a few msgs but i really dont know what is wrong with my comp.  the wireless internet works fine but the connection through the ethernet card does not work at all. another interesting fact is port one on the wireless router does not work anymore and that is where it was connected (we tried it on another lap top).  so, can i get this fixed without having to send my whole  lap top in. thanks!

How do the network adapters appear in the Device Manager? Any yellow question or exclamation marks next to the device?

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Click Hardware tab > Click Device Manager button > Look for Network Adaptors > click plus sign(+) next to it.

everything in there states that the device is working properly.  but it is not.  When the ethernet cord is plugged into the back it says, network cable is unplugged.   I have tried different cords, different ports on the router and everything works except port one and my computer. (tried with second lap top).  could it have been shorted due to a storm?  and if so is that covered under warranty?  and do i call 1800wwwdell to find out more?

Try connecting a cable to the Number 2 port of the router and the network port on your laptop.

See if you can see two lights next to the network port of your laptop. 1 amber lite(constant) and 1 green lite(flashing intermittently)?

If after say a minute you aren't getting the flashing green lite than suspect either the net port of laptop or #1 port of router, or both are fried.

so that doesn't work.  is this net port fixable?
thank you for your help.  maybe  tomorrow I will call dell and pled my case.

Getting the network port to operate on your laptop will most likely involve replacing the motherboard. That will involve sending in your laptop, if it is under warranty...

Is there some critical reason that you need the network port to operate?

i think that the internet runs faster through the net port than wireless...  i think computers should alwayss work perfect and never break... hahaha.  thanks again for you help
