File/Print shareing not working on XP/ME machines
Hi: Have an old Compaq running ME hooked into a Linksys Wireless router as a hub and use a lap top wirelessly. Both machines work fine for accessing the internet. Recently purchased an 8400. All three machines can see the internet through the router.
Want to get file/print sharing between the 8400 and the compaq. Ran the Network set-up wizard on the 8400 (XP professional) and ran the XP set-up disk on the ME machine to set up the workgroup (using the Set up home or small office networking option as recommended by the dell network guide).
On the ME machine (under Network Places) it is showing me the workgroup name but only the ME machine, it cannot see the 8400. The 8400 does not show me any workgroups and I get this error message when I try to force it to look for the workgroup "Mshome is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." Mshome is the same workgroup name on both computers. I have tried running the wizard several times but does not help. Any suggestions?

The main reasons that Windows XP and Windows 98/ME networks have trouble are due to the following:
1. Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and have unique names on the network
2. Make sure all firewalls are disabled while setting things up. In particular make sure that Windows XP's built-in firewall is disabled on the local area connection.
3. Make sure the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
4. Make sure the drives and folders have been designated as shared.
5. If the Windows 98/ME computers have Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary network logon, make sure that the proper username and password are entered when these machines boot. If Windows logon is the primary network logon, make sure that either a null password is used or that the correct password is used when booting these computers. Hitting the cancel button at the password prompt may prevent network connectivity.

Steve thanks for the tips. Sorry but I need some clarification on some of your points.
As to your first point. Yes they both use the same workgroup name and different computer name.
No sure how to disable the fire wall specifically on the network connection but I have taken off the windows firewall but it makes no difference.
How do you make sure the NetBIOS is enabled?
There is a shared documents folder with some misc stuff in it.
I think the Windows log in is the primary network log on in the ME machine. There is no password and I use the Enter key to get past the screen.
I have one more new piece of information. I got the IP addresses of both machines. When I ping the ME machine from the Dell running XP I am okay. When I try pinging the Dell machine while on it I get an error. When I try pinging the Dell machine from the ME machine also get an error but am okay when ping the ME machine from the ME machine. Don't know if this is relevant or not and how it can be fixed.
