Home Networking Requires Password

I have installed a wireless home network with a Dimension 4600 and an Inspiron Laptop. Both are running  XP Home SP2. I have run the home networking wizard on both machines and the wireless wizard setup. The network is encrypted via WEP. I have enabled file and print sharing on both computers. I can successfully see and use both file and printer resources on the Dimension 4600 from the Inspiron laptop.

"My Network Places" on the Dimension 4600 shows both computers but when I try to access the resources on the laptop from the Dimension 4600 I get a log-in screen that requires a password.

Neither computer is configured to require Windows log-in. I have disabled all firewalls (both Windows & EZ-Armor) and the results are the same. Both computers are in the same workgroup.

The Dimension 4600 cannot access any resources on the laptop because a pasword is required that does not exist. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

On the login/password window, did you click "okay" button with the fields blank?

What happened?

When the OK button is hit, the password dialog box comes back on since it believes the password is incoreect. As I stated before, there is no Windows log-on required for the user.

I'd suggest going into "User Accounts" in Control Panel on the Laptop. Choose the "Nan/Guest" account and turn it off. See if that works?

The OS users name was setup with no password. The computer name, in this case is Nan. What appears in the dialog box is the computer name which is greyed out and shows up as "Nan/Guest" with the password box being active for an entry.

I noticed in the Administartor Tools that there is a .NET Framework wizard which has settings to adjust neywork settings. Do you think that this may be triggering the Password dialog box?

If memory serves, during the OS setup process you have to at least declare an owner name(Rick James, TBA) for your computer, in order to complete the setup process. You have the option whether, or not to have a password. I think that this login box is requiring this info from your laptop. Registered name, no password, hit "Okay" button would be my guess...

What do you mean turn it off? There is not such function, you can delete an account but you cannot turn it off.

No chance of a third firewall. There is only the Windows firewall and the EZ Armor firewall. As I stated before. I had disabled both and the problem is still there.

Do you by chance have a third party firewall running?

Which files?  Only the D&S Folder on the Home machine can be shared.

I don't think you looked at the original problem.

The network is setup for file and print sharing. When I click on "My Network Places" I can see both PCs on the 4600. When I click on the laptop icon I get the Password dialog box that asks for the password for Nan/guest user name. At this point it doesn't make any difference what files are shareable since I can't get into the system.

As i indicated in my initial problem definition, i am trying to do file and print sharing on both PCs. I can share the resources on the 4600 from the laptop, but i cannot share the laptop printer and files from the desktop.

What resources are trying to be shared on the XP Home machine?

Sorry, I now see that both your computers are running XP Home. I have XP Pro, I guess that is a feature on Pro that is not on Home. Can you create user accounts on Home?

A quick and easy test is to give "Everyone" access to the share.  If that does it, then it is a permisisions issues with the established account.  If not, then that firewall is still running.  Did you check the Services applet?

Are you absolutely sure that the C: drive on the computer that you cannot access is designated as a shared drive?  Are you absolutely sure that the printer you trying to share is designated as a shared printer?
