Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG only works with the Intel Software

Question

Hi there,   I've got a strange problem with my laptop. I don't want to use the Intel wireless software because of its heavy ressources usage so I turned it off (let windows handle... blabla), even uninstall it and only let the rlan drivers, but it seems that windows can't handle the 3945ABG adaptor. The adaptor is well detected, works very well with the Intel software (connects itself to my wireless network...) but with the Windows Zero Configuration utility (the service is on, i've already checked), the adaptor don't find any wireless network, even when I enter the SSID as a favorite network.   I used all my knowledge on this, but it didn't help. Does anyone have an answer to my problem ?   thanx, clysthene.

when you say wzc wont find any wireless network do you mean it says 'windows cannot configure.....' or 'no wireless networks found in range'?

i can think of two possibilites:   1) the SSID broadcast is disabled on the router. login to your router configuration page and check for the same. if it is disabled then enable it, open wzc and connect and then disable it on the router.   2) wzc is not configured to connect to Access Point/Infrastructured network. right-click on the wireless icon in network connections in control panel and click properties. go to the wireless networks tab and click the Advanced button at the bottom. ensure the first option 'any network' is selected

thanks for your two propositions,

but... it didn't work, all the options you've mentionned were already enabled...

I'm amazed by the weight ok the intel software (approx 56 Mo) just for a wireless connection. There must be one of the four intel software services that manages to make the hardware detect the networks in range in a different way than wzc.

besides the wzc service, wich are the other services that windows needs to have the wireless running ?

problem solved !   I've finally found that the 'Event Log Service' is needed by wzc in order to detect networks in range, so I turned in on.   So now I'm starting XP pro with only 123 Mo of allocated memory for all the processes including firewall and AV.   Thanx, clysthene.

That means you are one step closer to understand the chaos in windows and Intel software. If you try little bit more you will find much more things which need unnecessary services running :) Once I found out that Hansaworld (total ) needs winfax.dll :smileyvery-happy: I see such humor every know and then, but never get used to it :smileywink:

I found exactly the same problem!   The Windows utility can't register a IP address. And once it has failed the connection it renables the Intel PRO Set Wireless.   I haven't solved it. And i don't think it takes too many resources.   Nick

I've got the same problem, but I've got Vista.  It connects through a LAN connection just fine, however with wireless it will find and disconnect on and off.  I was on chat and on the phone with Dell for hours and still haven't figured it out.  He finally hung up and said he could no longer help me because he had no idea what was going on and couldn't figure it out.  He went as far as to have me take my computer apart and unplug the card and plug it back in.  He also had me reformat my computer and put it back to factory settings.   If I can't figure this out, the computer is going back...I've only had it for 2 days.  I have no use for a computer that can't keep a wireless signal.  I have a desktop (what I'm on now).  If I wanted a computer that stayed stationary for a LAN connection I would've purchased another desktop.   I've read a lot of places that it can be Dell's software, but I've read threads like this that said you need Intel's software?  I'm not good with computers at all so all of this is very frustrating and I don't know what I'm doing.    I just need an answer.  Please.

I don't know how to do that. I'm not really good with computers. I ran a search for the Event Log Service and I couldn't find it. Is it even on Vista?

I don't want to switch back to XP and I couldn't if I wanted to. I bought a computer with Vista and so I don't have a spare disc with XP laying around and I'm not about to go out and buy it.

The guy I talked to at Dell told me to run a clean install of Vista to get everything Dell off of the system, so I am running a computer with just Vista on it right now. That didn't help. So we've (the Dell guy and I) both run out of options. Next option, if I can't get it to work, is to send it back. I have no use for it right now. I primarily use a computer for the internet...and on my notebook, wireless internet.

If you could help me find the Event Log Service that'd be great! I tired Intel and their latest updates are from January. They also don't do support for wireless anymore, which stinks considering they still sell the products.

Sorry to sound so harsh, but I just spent $1500 on a computer I haven't been able to use yet.

Hi, I have Dell Dimension 2400, Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz, 2.30 GHZ, 512MB, Windows XP Home Edition and its about 2 years old. I wanted to know if there is anyway I can somehow add a wireless upgrade to my computer. Thanks

Interesting???   I would like to know more about this event log service as well.  I'm currently searching XP's help section to see if I can find anything... so far no luck.  Will resort to web seraching if no success.

You probably have tried this, why don't you go to intel.com and download the driver and utility? And i am sure Dell would have a driver.   I am going to get Vista very soon and i think if i can't get it to work i wont bother.   Nick,

I had the same problem my wireless network kept connecting and disconecting, turns out it had up my router somehow. I reset the router back to factory defaults and then reconfigured with my original preferences and now my wireless works perfectly ok. Hope this helps!

Same thing worked for me.  I hit the reset button on my Linksys router and now it works perfectly fine.  In fact I'm on it right now for the first time since I bought my computer.   Thank you!
