Internet connection with Linksys wireless PCI card
I just received a new Dell Dimension 2400 (running XP) and have successfully installed by palm pilot, the printer, the webcam and have one major problem.I can't get onto the internet. I have a wireless card which I have tested in my old computer (running 98) and it works so it is not the wireless card. I have installed and uninstalled the driver, I have spent hours onthe phone with linksys, I have turned on and off the modem and router. I have spent hours on the phone with Dell. All to no avail. When I get into the PCI configuration card utility, I can click on connect and the system connects for about 20 seconds and then goes out. I also tried disabling the antivirus programs, that didn't work. I also made sure that the firewall wasn't on.
I am wondering if there is something, perhaps some software that Dell loaded on the computer that is interfering with this. Has anyone had this experience? I see from some of the posting that there are similar problems but I'm not enough of an expert to know the terminology (ie, I am a novice!).
Also, I was thinking about deleting the Broadcom Program management software but I don't know what it does. I know it has to do with the local area network. I actually did try to delete it and the system wouldn't let me saying that "the install script engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup (or uninstall in this case).
Help!

LIZBD,
I have had better luck using the manufacturer's wireless management program than Win XP's Wireless Zero Configuration. In Win XP, Linksys prefers that you use WZC, but their own management utility will also work.
First, download the latest driver for your wireless network adapter from Linksys and install it. You should also be able to download the management software. To disable WZC, open the properties of the wireless connection and on the Wireless tab, uncheck the box saying Let Windows Manage this Connection. Then start the Linksys utility.
Also, in Device Manager, disable any power saving features.

LIZBD,
Open IE and go to Tools - Internet options - Connections tab. Make sure "Never dial..." is selected. Then click the LAN Settings button and make sure none of the checkboxes are checked. OK out. Shutdown and restart IE and see if you have internet connectivity.
If not, can you ping the router or access point you are trying to connect through? Can you access the router/acces points browser based configuration tool? Make sure the router/access point is not configured to perform MAC filtering, or if it is, that the MAC address of your wireless adapter is in the filter table.
The D2400 comes with an integrated ethernet network adapter. The Broadcomm software controls it.

Paladin,
Thank you for this. I really appreciate your advice. I did this and now I have a very nice signal strength. Unfortunately, I still can't get into the internet. If I double click on internet explorer, I don't get anything. It seems that there is something inhibiting the linkage to the internet. I wonder if it could be a setting in my explorer. What do you think?

PS. Do you know what Broadcom advanced control suite does?
