I installed a fresh copy of XP tonight and to my dismay the default network drivers did not install, there is NO lan connection and thus i cannot connect to the internet to even get the WIFI drivers. And since there is 6000 drivers for each model laptop I have no idea <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> i need. I live in south africa so please give me a link to the lan driver so i can let windows do the rest automatically, im so over OEM <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> drivers and what not.

Thanks. I just bought a usb wifi adapter and used that to get access to the internet and use the dell tool to update the drivers. However, after much frustration with XP I have been wondering about upgrading to win 7. Is it recommended to do so with only 2GB ram though? Thank you

Its recommended to upgrade to Windows 7. This system should take 64 Bit Windows 7 and 2 GB of RAM is minimum requirements for Windows 7 64 Bit.
Windows XP has reached End of Life and is unsecure, likely you will run into problems with its continued use online.
Dell do not list Windows 7 compatible drivers so I made an unofficial set here:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/driver-sets/latitude-d-series-laptops/
And unlike Dell I list the system drivers in the correct installation order and mark variants.
My Windows Reinstallation Guide may also help you:

For Windows 7 the Ethernet driver will be inbuilt.
The wireless card will work natively with Windows 7 however you can get an up to date driver from here:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/driver-sets/dell-wireless-cards/
In order to identify your wireless card follow the steps here and perform a search on the page for the first line of your hardware ID:

If you have issues post your hardware ID and I can tell you the driver directly.
