The lights from both the router and laptop light up when i plug in the cable.
I ran the diagnostic, but it asked me to type in the IP address im trying to log into...and it failed.
The Device Manager shows that the card is working.
The first thing I did after reinstalling XP is getting the ethernet card to be installed by using the XP Home disk I created from the laptop when I first got it and updating the LAN driver because the LAN shows up under "Other Devices" and (?).
Right now Im running the Diagnostic partition (extended) and after that im going to try the troubleshooting option in the device manager. Then Im going to reinstall XP again, but do a FULL format and see if that does anything.....which I think wont make and difference.
If all else fails, then Ill contact Dell via email or phone and see what they can do about it. I still have 269 days left in my warranty.
Do the link lights next to the RJ45 ports on both the computer and the router light up when you have the cable plugged in and both devices powered on? Have you tried running the Broadcom diagnostics on the network device? Does the network adapter show up in Device Manager and show that it is working properly? When your reinstalled Windows, did you install the chipset drivers before attempting to install any other devices?
Make sure you install the chipset drivers for your motherboard. Without the chipset drivers, many other devices will never work nor will you be able to install drivers form them. If you can't find the chipset drivers on your CD, you can download them from:
Installed Win XP Pro (without SP1 or SP2) on a partition that was formatted not in the quick mode.
Then installed the Intel Chipset drivers from the Dell website. Then the Broadcom LAN drivers...also from the Dell website. Got the Private Network thing which is Limited Connectivity.
Then I installed the Intel 2200BG Wireless drivers from the Dell site because wireless is the only thing that still works.
Fully updated XP Pro to SP2 and the other critical updates and still get the Limited Connectivity.
The I found something in the troubleshooter in the Dell site that said to Run->CMD->"netsh winsock reset." And its no help.
Ill be getting a replacement router within a week to see if the router is the problem...but its not.

It's no sounding to me like it is a problem with the network adpater in the computer, since you cannot connect to any ethernet network.
