network controller drivers not found dell inspiron 6400

Hi i just reinstalled windows on my laptop and i figured i could just download drivers from the dell website. after following the installation order specified on the website.. installing first the NSS and then the chipset, etc.. I realized there wasn't a driver for the NIC on the website. i also noticed that the steps didn't include a step for ethernet drivers, so i replaced the NIC step with installing the broadcom integrated controller. unfortunately, after completing the rest of the installation steps, my Network Controller driver is still not installed (looking in the device manager), a hardwire connection through the ethernet cable gives me "limited or no connectivity" and there is no wireless capability whatsoever.

this has been giving me issues for a day now, i have reinstalled windows several times to try to follow the steps exactly, but nothing is working. please help!

dell inspiron 6400, now running windows xp home edition with SP2

tbittner02,

The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first, then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)

The Broadcom Driver is for the wired ethernet port of the nic. If you want to go wirelessly then you first need to know which wireless nic you have so you can load the correct driver for the card. They are listed here under network.

Hi sajithjs2,

I understand that you need the drivers for the network controller.

Also let me know if the computer model is an Inspiron 6400?

I request you to private message the system service tag number. To private message, accept my friend request; click on my user name and click start conversation. As this computer has 2 wireless cards we can check which wireless card is present in the computer.

For any further questions in future please feel free to contact us.

Hi frosty,

There is specific order in which the drivers are to be installed. Please use the following link for detailed instructions: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&docid=268873&doclang=en&l=en&s=gen&cs

Since you have installed network drivers, here is the link for driver’s page and ensure that the Operating System as Windows Vista: http://dell.to/QRV6Pk

Please post back with the results.
