obtain ip automatically? 0.0.0.0

Hello,

I recieved my new 600m last week and i want to remove the unnessary software so I reformated and reinstalling XP pro.

So, i installed all the drivers and when i want to connect to the internet my IP comes up as 0.0.0.0

I try to delete the WINSOCKS and reinstalling DHCP...

no use, still get 0.0.0.0...

to actually get online, i would  have to manualy insert the IP.

HELP, how do i get my computer to obtain the IP automatically?

=)

THANKS!

What's your DHCP server?

Here's Microsoft's article on troubleshooting that problem. It was found by searching Google for dhcp ip address 0.0.0.0.

What is your DHCP server (home broadband router, ISP DSL connection, cable connection, or ...)?

Is it logging anything about this? An IP address of 0.0.0.0 usually means the DHCP server refused to issue an IP address.

Not sure if its a hardware or software problem.

The only hardware problem I can think of is a link speed negotiation problem. You might try forcing the link speed and duplex on the machine and see if that works. If possible, force the same settings on the switch port the 600m's connected to. If that's the problem, I'd expect trouble maintaining stable connections with a static IP address, though.

The 10/100/1000 chipset in the 600m's a bit unusual for a laptop. Are the drivers for the NIC current? The most recent ones I spotted are v.6.64.0.0, A02, release date 6/26/2003.

I'm running out of ideas! I suspect you've looked at the 600m XP Reinstall Guide, and done what's suggested there, especially reinstalling the chipset drivers.

Yes, I am about to return these back to DELL!!

I can see why! It's very unusual for the shipped image to work, but a reinstall can't be done! Better to find things like that out before deployment! I would think Dell would be very interested in helping you figure this out.

Users:

DHCP is a means of software to provide multiple machines with an IP address.  If the network card itself is failing then there would be a red X or yellow exclamation point in the Device Manager.  I suggest the following:

  • Reinstall the network drivers on the system.
  • See if you can update the firmware on the router being connected to.
  • Run the Dell diagnostic test on the system motherboard (test the nic).

Is a firewall on the 600M preventing it from seeing the DHCP server?
