Here are some questions that will help us to troubleshoot your issue....
A. How is your computer network set up? IE cable modem/dsl with a WAP (switch/router/firewall combo device)
B. Have you verified that everything is connected correctly between the incoming ISP device (cable/dsl) ARe the proper lights showing on the incoming device?
C. Have you gone into the settings of the router/firewall/switch/wap to verify that it is set up correctly?
D. When you look at your wireless network connection on your laptop do you see packets incoming and outgoing ?
E. Can you ping the WAP ? Do you know the IP address for the WAP?
F. Make sure your Windows Firewall is turned off IF you are using XP with SP2
G. go to a command prompt and type ipconfig and see if you are getting an ip address.
If you have a 169.*.*.* that means the WAP is not giving you an IP address for your internal network. You should be getting 192.168.1.* or 10.1.1.* etc....
Sorry for all the questions but we need to dig a little deeper into your setup to troubleshoot it.

A. cable modem; firewall has been disabled.
B. Yes
C. As far as I can tell.
D. If packets are the bars, all of them "light" up
E. How do you ping a WAP?
F. Firewall has been disabled since yesterday.
G. I do get the 192.168.0.1 showing that I am connected to WPA.
Let me know what other info you need.
Thank you so much for taking time to help!

Go to a command prompt and type the following
ipconfig -------> write down the ip address for your wireless lan connection
ipconfig /release all ------> will release IP lease on all adapters
ipconfig /renew all -------> will look for dhcp server on wap and renew your ip address on all adapters.
Tell me what the ip address is on your wireless ethernet connection is. Is it the same or different?

Media State disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway
After I completed all the commands you listed, the screen says: The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation.
I have my cable modem hooked to my desktop which is how I am talking to you. Is that what it is referring to as an adapter?

Cable modem or DSL modem (whichever) coming into your home via the ISP...
Ethernet cable plugged into the WAN port on the DSL/Cable modem going into the
Firewall/switch/router/wap device.
Ethernet cable running from RJ45 port on firewall/switch/router/wap device to the Ethernet port on your desktop computer....
If the answer is no, hook it up like that. THEN
Power off the pc
power off the router/switch
power off the cable or dsl modem
Wait 3 to 5 min
Power everything up in reverse order
You can also try finding the reset button on both the cable/dsl modem and the router/switch/wap and hold those in for 10 seconds.
Hope this helps

I am having the same problem. My desktop is wireless and works fine, my laptop is not. A friend told me to reset the router/modem, but I do not see how to do that. I disconnected the power and powered back on..what else is there?
I also have pinged my wireless connection from my laptop and have no Default Gateway either, no packets sent.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I had the same problem..working on it for two days. I went into my router setup page to find my encryption key.
I have 128 bit encryption WEP...you need to have the same encryption key from the router on your wireless network card.
I did it and now my laptop is encrypted and wireless. Default Gateway is now there.
Try this
Hope this helps

Check my last post. Problem Solved.
See if this helps before you have the cable company come out. You may just need to check your settings, ie key values

RIGHT-click Local Area Network and choose 'Properties'
highlight 'Internet Properties' and click 'Properties'
On the 'General' tab, look down toward the lower right and click a button 'Advanced'
