MSCONFIG Required Start-up Items

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 Laptop which is approximately 4 years old. Can anyone tell me what the “must have” start up items in MSCONFIG would be?  My system is Windows XP Professional. I have tons of items there which have slowed my computer down considerably.  I know with Windows 98 a PC had to at least have Scan Registry, Task Monitor, etc. plus antivirus at start-up. What does XP Professional require?

I have seen it will very few items like AV / WIRELESS and so one. I have also seen it with nothing checked... The AV and wireless items still seem to load up.

Whatever you wish to do really.

Thanks

Check out this site for help in deciding what items to uncheck.

Everything in msconfig should be checked.  Msconfig is a troubleshooting utility and should not be used to set what does and does not run at startup under normal conditions.

If there is something starting that you do not want, then go into that program's configuration and tell it  not to start at boot.  If you no longer want the program, then uninstall it through the control panel.  If it is a left over, get some expert help in removing it - there are many competent computer help forums out there (including here) that can help you with that.  Worst case, use a third party startup manager that is meant to be used as a permanent solution and not must a troubleshooting tool.

NEVER use msconfig to disable services.  Msconfig can and will disable services that are vital to system operation and unchecking the wrong item can result in a non-bootable system.  You are much better off - and much safer - to make service changes under 'services.msc' using black viper's site (link in previous post) as a guide.
