Does Intel i5 12500E work on the Dell OptiPlex 7000 SFF?

The specs only list non-E and non-T variants of the 12th gen CPUs for this particular SFF. However, the E is very much similar to a 12500. I'd like confirmation whether the 12500E is whitelisted by the Dell BIOS.

Also, this is more out of curiosity, but would the 12500T work? It is only listed as compatible with the 7000 Mini, but not with the SFF that I have, or with the Tower.

[SOLVED] It works.

@redxps630​ I installed the 12500E in the Dell OptiPlex 7000 SFF and it worked. It works both with BIOS 1.6.3 and with BIOS 1.7.3 (latest at the time of writing). It is also properly detected in the bios as the “E” version. I am glad that Dell did not block this one.

To anyone reading, the 12500E worked fine with the Gigabyte B660M Gaming X DDR4 motherboard as well.

Hi

NB: Below is more opinion than fact, so please don't use it as the only basis for your question, let us hope other more informed people offer solutions.

Physically, probably yes; officially, no guarantee.

Practical answer

  • Best choice: standard Core i5-12500 or Dell-listed i5-12500 vPro.

  • i5-12500E: may boot and operate, but treat it as an unsupported experiment, not a guaranteed upgrade.

  • Make sure the processor is a socketed LGA1700 desktop chip, not a soldered embedded module or engineering sample.

  • Update the OptiPlex BIOS to the latest version before testing.

  • Expect possible issues with BIOS microcode, Intel vPro/AMT features, Dell diagnostics, or system-management functions.

  • The SFF’s existing 65 W cooling solution should be thermally suitable if the CPU is accepted.

For a repair or reliable customer system, I would not buy the 12500E specifically. Use the regular i5-12500; the 12500E’s embedded status and slightly lower 4.5 GHz maximum turbo versus 4.6 GHz for the supported i5-12500 provide no worthwhile advantage here.

12th gen T cpu work in 7000 tower. Reason why not validated by Dell is they reserve low power energy efficient cpu for micro due to cooling concern and only validate standard tdp cpu in tower.

@redxps630​ oh, so there is a risk that it doesn’t work, right ? :( Guess I’ll have to test to see for sure.. I was hoping to know for sure before trying to move the CPU from another PC (non-prebuilt, with usual atx b660 motherboard) into the SFF.

i5-12500e and i7-12700e are very seldomly validated by user in various non-Dell motherboards.

@redxps630​ I understand. I did not even know that 12500E existed until I found a second-hand offer for it; I got it for what would be 76 EUR or 87 USD, a few months ago, so a good offer, I believe.

Since you mentioned it's not often validated, for anyone getting to this post, I can confirm it works well on the Gigabyte B660M Gaming X DDR4 motherboard. I've been using the machine for some weeks as a media server.

I will be back with a reply after I test the CPU in the 7000 SFF.
