Optiplex gx620
Hi, I have an optiplex gx620 currently running Windows 10 from Windows XP with a Pentium 4 HT. For a Processor upgrade I know the Pentium D series is recommended and a Pentium D 960 can be used with a copper heatsink, so my questions are could it run a Pentium extreme edition and what is the highest Pentium D it could run without upgrading the heatsink.
Thanks, Matt

The Motherboard and Power Supply do not support "Pentium extreme edition" 960 is max.
If you want to use that processor you need Dell Precision T3400 with 525W power supply.
The T3400 also supports 16 gigs of ram vs the GX620 3.50 gigs max.

@redxps630
"dual-core Pentium D Presler only works with Intel 975X chipset, it may also work with 955X chipset."
That's nonsense.
Pentium D Smithfield 800 series and Pressler 900 series
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/27520/intel-pentium-d-processor-945-4m-cache-3-40-ghz-800-mhz-fsb.html
aka D915 and up to D960 works fine for OptiPlex™ GX620
Models DCTR, DCNE, DCSM, DCCY with bios A11.
That's what I @speedstep use on mine.
This is known since windows Vista Capable in 2007

Q: Which is the fastest processor that GX620 (BIOS A11) support?
A: Intel Pentium D 960 3.6GHz.
Regulatory Model (Mini-Tower): DCSM or DCSM1F
Regulatory Model (Desktop): DCNE or DCNE1F
Regulatory Model (Small Form Factor): DCCY or DCCY1F
Regulatory Model (Ultra Small Form Factor): DCTR or DCTR1F

The board will take 4 gigs but the onboard INTEL 945 GMA steals 512 meg of system ram and you never get that back.
This is why and XPS 400 or Precision T3400 is a better option allowing ALL system ram to be used by the processor.
Other models are worse where it has 3.25 gigs ram with 4 gigs installed like the Dimension E520.
Most of the hardware uses Native Windows 7/8/10 Drivers with the exception of the Audio Codec.
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/solutions/en/winvista_faqs_rel?c=us&l=en&cs=prem#faq0...
To run the premium versions of Windows Vista, including the Windows AeroTM user interface, PC's should be configured with at least 1GB system RAM and 128 MB graphics memory.
To help further optimize the Windows Vista experience Dell recommends 2 GB dual-channel (2-DIMMs) system RAM, a Dual-Core processor, a 7200 rpm Hard Drive and at least a 256 MB discrete graphics card.
The Analog Devices AD198X codec does have WHQL drivers from the Microsoft Catalog.
microsoft catalog Analog Devices 5.12.1.7010 32 BIT

microsoft catalog Analog Devices 5.12.2.7010 64 BIT

Pentium D 915 and up will run and load 64 bit windows 7/8/10.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/163612505041
HOWEVER this will not solve the problem of the INTEL GM 945 video from stealing 512 megs of system ram. Does not matter if its WIN 7 8 10.
It will show 4 gigs installed 3.5 usable.
Given that these cpus are $5 or so there is no reason not to upgrade to them.
Higher than D915 will have thermal problems without the copper performance heatsink.

@Matt218
The internal sound drivers require the DOT NET 3.5 to be installed and then the OEM driver for soundmax.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22
Onboard video is also not native to windows.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29370/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-Driver-for-Windows-7-64-exe-
https://dl.dell.com/video/R181486.exe
You do need to update bios to A11 BEFORE changing CPU.
http://downloads.dell.com/bios/A11GX620.EXE
This is a known issue.
Copper Heatsink Depends on What Size GX620 you have.
Cannot use Pentium D on the USFF Size.
All of these questions were answered in 2007 long before windows 10 existed.
If you desire more than 3.5 gigs of ram get a video card like a geforce 710 and an XPS 400 desktop.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/174834945707
The XPS 400 is the model that is almost exactly like the GX620 but it does not have onboard video stealing ram and can be upgraded to a full 8 gigs usable ram.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/384254331699
For MINI TOWER
Q: Is my Heatsink compatible with Pentium D 960?
A: Both versions of Pentium D 960 (SL9K7 - D0 - 95W) or (SL9AP - C1 - 130W) will need DELL Performance Heatsink J9761. I also recommend Arctic Silver 5 (Thermal Paste).

GX620 chipset is Intel 945. OP is correct that Pentium D 960 can work in GX620 per user benchmark report.
Pentium Extreme Edition (PXE) 840 was based on the dual-core Pentium D Smithfield with Hyper-threading enabled. The only chipsets that worked with 840 were Intel's 955X ... Using a PXE with an Intel 945 chipset will disable Hyper-threading.
PXE 955/965 based on the dual-core Pentium D Presler only works with Intel 975X chipset, it may also work with 955X chipset.

I thought it supported a whole 4gb ram. Also I am running 32bit Windows 10 currently, with the 960 would I be able to run 64bit more comfortably and faster. Ty btw

I forgot to ask in addition…I have an external sound card because there was no windows 10 drivers for the internal and it didn’t work, is there any drivers I missed on the dell site or elsewhere?

Also what exactly is DOT NET and where can I find the OEM driver for soundmax (Is it already installed?). And the video, what is intel graphics media accelerator, and what do you mean by Onboard Video is not native to windows...the graphics are working fine on this machine currently my old dell monitor from like 07' is slowly taking a dump but that's an issue for another day and it needs to be replaced anyway. I didn't realize there are two additions of the Pentium D 960, does one have better speed more cache, which would you recommend. I know you said it could run Windows 10 64 but would you recommend over 32-bit bit. I'm looking to just keep this system on the road with small cheap upgrades, my friend has some old computer/parts he acquired from work so I get to have a field day of free parts to bring this system a little more up to par, I'm also looking for my uncle who I originally got this PC from back in around 2011 (I think) he got 3 from his work and gave this one to me, he currently uses both of them as his primary machines (he upgraded the CPU in one of them I think (the mini tower I believe), I should talk to him about as well, I'd like to get him one for his small form factor)
Sorry if this isnt written great. It's late eastern time and I'm tired. I really want to say thanks for all the assistance in getting this thing to be the best it can be.

Small form factor cannot use 130W PENTIUM D960 power supply is too small.
Buy a newer dell rather than upgrade that unit.
I already linked DOTNET and the OEM driver for audio and video.

I am tempted to upgrade mine too, will have to check passmark scores on the d960 cpu but, I have an inspiron 620 which is faster (2nd gen core ) and it is a good candidate for a cpu upgrade, ram and ssd and also a few amd fm2 plus apu systems that are way faster than them both.
a cpu upgrade and ssd will always speed up a system but consider what your using it fot and the other bottlenecks, internet speed and/or video card (if gaming).
I actually am removing all the pristine gx620 parts to use the mini tower with a new motherboard cpu, power supply etc.
I think the reason the cpu fan/heatsink mount / motherboard is fastened into the case is for stability, security and also adds more metal to dissipate heat. That whole case is like a heat sink.
Add extra case fans for more airflow if your worried about heat as well as a huge heatsink and/or coolermaster cpu cooler IMHO.
