OptiPlex model that allows two 6 TB 3.5" hard-disk drives
Greetings. I am planning to get an OptiPlex desktop that comes with a 256 GB M.2 SSD, and that would allow me to later add two of my own 6 TB 3.5 inch HDDs. Are there any OptiPlex desktop models that can fit one M.2 SSD, and two 3.5 inch HDDs?
- The OptiPlex 3000 Tower has "3 SATA slots for 3.5-inch/2.5-inch HDD/SSD, and Optical Drive".
- The OptiPlex 5000 Tower has "4 SATA slots for 3.5-inch/2.5-inch HDD/SSD, and slim Optical Drive".
Does this mean that OptiPlex 3000 Tower and OptiPlex 5000 Tower both fit my requirements?
The storage matrix and storage specifications show a different story:
- OptiPlex 3000 Tower Setup and Specifications - Storage
- OptiPlex 5000 Tower Setup and Specifications - Storage
None of them seem to support two 3.5 inch HDDs at any one time. There also appears to be a 4 TB limit on the HDD capacity!?
Please advise.

I think you may be out of luck. On page 22 you can see how the 3.5" drive is mounted to the side of the case, not in slots like you'd find in a custom case (or even other Dells). The "slots" they are referring to in the quotes above are SATA sockets on the motherboard, and don't actually mean physical slots for the drives.
That said, look at where the 2.5" drive caddy is located. If by some chance there are screw holes for a 3.5" drive there, maybe you could mount the second one there, but I'm not optimistic about that since the 2.5" caddy just snaps in and there's no reason to expect it snaps into a 3.5" hole pattern.
I don't think these are intended for 2x 3.5" drives, though if you really want to get creative, you could possibly squeeze a second in there somewhere.
