1600sc nolong working

I have been running a poweredge for a couple of weeks without any problems.

This morning the machine simply stopped working. I noticed that the connection to the machine was no loger working and when I phycially had a look at the machine ut had switched off completely.

Pressing the power button to start it up again resulted in the two green lights in the front lighting up and that was it. no further sign of live from the machine. Problem is that I obviously can't do any diagnostics about what is went wrong, as the machine is no longer booting, and also doesn't reach the state where the beep codes would give an indication what is wrong.

It seems that the power suppply is still letting enough power through to let the led lightup, but whether the problem is with the powersupply or some-one else??

So switch machine on little green lights in the front briefly light up and then nothing. any one has any idea what might be the problem?

Lets say that one of the CPU's has failed on a dual CPU system, any suggestions on how to diagnose that condition?

The book trouble shooting guide from Dell doesn't really provide a lot of usefull clues as to how to identify that condition.

No video can mean that 1 of the cpu's has failed in a dual system.

however lighting an LED is not a Good "test" of a power supply.

Get a Saftey ground strap with Resistor.

Shut off and unplug.

Open cover.

Remove both cpu's and put them into the first cpu slot 1 at a time.

If it comes up with an error about the termination card being missing this is an ok cpu.

If nothing comes up with either I would suspect that the power or something else is damaged.

OK,

Your suggestios seems easy enough, but reality is almost always more complex so here we go.

The CPU seems not to be the one provided by Dell neither is the cooling system.

The CPU's in the system are 3Ghz Xeon and not the 2.4 where the system was shipped with.

The cooling system is from intel and can be viewed at:

http://www.pagecomputers.com/cgi-bin/page/P0000576.html?id=qEnI6ejD

problem is not to remove the fan, also to remove the part shown on the left is not a problem, but once you get to the clips shown in the middle I wouldn't have a clue how to remove those. The top centre bit seems to be mounted by these clips aswell. any idea how to remove those would be most welcome. Are there special tools to remove them??

another option would be to investigate the problem from a different angle. That would be easier as I wouldn't have to  fuss around with the CPU and cooling system.

I also understand that there is paste between the CPU and the heatsync, If I succeed in removing the heatsync, would I need to apply new past before attaching the Heatsync again?  ANd this paste. it wouldn't normally harden out so that the CPU and heatsync would stick together?

Any suggestions are welcome/

Hi, forum. I have same problem as Rien Otterman. First my 1600sc lost connection, and I went to the server and reinstalled the network driver and then restart it. Since then my 1600sc was totally dead -- no signal to monitor at all.

When I power on the 1600sc, yes, HD LED is green, and fans are running. My server has only one CPU, so there should be no problem of Dual CPU. Then I removed the CPU, memory, and HD, and restart the 1600sc, nothing comes out -- EVEN the beeps. I tested the CPU, memory and HD of this 1600sc on another server, they are working fine.

So I totally do not know how I figure out what's wrong with this 1600sc -- fective motherboard or power supply?

Any ideas? Thanks a lot

Jenny,

If you would like to diagnose whether you have the same problem then please do the following:

the Motherboard has tow power supplies (the twenty pin and the the small one (8, 10, or 12 pins) I believe.

When I disconeected the small connector the vans would still work, but the motherboard would no longer fuuction.

AS I am in Europe and the computer came from the US I returned the board to the supplier and he is looking into it (so he says). He beelieves it is to do with the CPU,so if you have a spare Xeon floating around that fits the n this would be worthwhile to check.

Hope you find it helpfull
