Hi everyone,

I am experiencing some issues related to CPU error warnings on Dell PowerEdge R740 server. Message ID CPU0704 , description is "CPU 1 machine check error detected." After restarting the server then it returns to normal. I would like to know if anyone has encountered this situation and how to fix it. Please help.

Hi, the “CPU 1 machine check error detected” message on your Dell PowerEdge R740 server is usually not an error of the CPU itself, but a sign that the CPU has detected an error in the system1. It could be caused by a non-CPU event, such as a firmware mismatch, a system BUS interruption, or a memory read/write interruption.

To resolve this error, you can try the following steps:

  • Check the system event log for any other errors occurring around the same time as the CPU machine check error. If any other errors are identified, resolve these errors first.
  • Update the BIOS and iDRAC firmware to the latest version. You can use the iDRAC interface or other methods to update the firmware.
  • Clear the system event log. You can do this in Open Manage Server Administrator or iDRAC. Old CPU machine check errors will cause an alert after the error has been resolved unless they are cleared from the system event log.
  • Shut down the system, remove the power cable and hold in the server power button for 20 seconds before plugging the power cable back and turning the system on again. This process is known as a flea power drain.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.

The events I collected don't reflect any app-side issues. Maybe I'll try to update the BIOS if the error happen again.
