Error codes VLT0204 and PWR2402 on a PowerEdge R720XD

Hello i recently shut down this server to do a cpu swap (2x E5-2670 to 2x E5-2660v2), after rebooting the server it refuses to power on with just iDRAC working with the "PWR2402: iDRAC is unable to communicate with power management firmware." and "VLT0204 The system board fail-safe voltage is outside of range." Errors.

I have tried the following:

  • Tried the old cpus 2670's and the new 2660v2's and tried inserting CPU 1 to the CPU 2 socket.
  • Removed all the ram but one stick in the A1 slot, Removed all the pcie risers and Unplugged the power connections to the backplane. Also tried removing all the hotswappable fans.
  • Swapped PSU 1 with PSU 2 and tried with a single one inserted (1100W )
  • Physically moving the server to a different location.
  • Setting the NVRAM_CLR jumper and unplugging and replugging along with holding the power button down for 20 seconds in between and leaving it unplugged overnight.
  • Updating iDRAC to the latest firmware and attempted to update the bios which failed due to not being able to reboot.

As of now in any configuration when powered the only functional things are the iDRAC and fan 4 which runs at lowest speed. No other fans react when powered.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
What I might suggest is- that you put the old CPU back on then update the idrac/ BIOS and then I'll try the new CPU one more time.
Let us know how it goes.

@DELL-Young E I have put the old CPU back in and updated the idrac. the BIOS update fails due to not being able to power on. Same errors still when trying to power on with either the new or the old cpu

Hello Shirleen,

You have done a lot of good troubleshooting.

I would like to verify you used this configuration for Minimum-to-POST configuration:

*One Power Supply

*Control Panel (for power button functionality)

*Working cable connection between control panel and system board

*One Processor (CPU) in socket CPU1 (minimum for troubleshooting)

*One Memory Module (DIMM) installed in socket A1

*System Board

*Backplane (for R720xd control panel connection)

Remove anything not on that list:   NVMe, DVD, Hard drives, PERC controller, backplane, network card, Network Daughter card, NIC cable, any pcie cards, USB devices, …. anything not on the list remove.

If it does not power on try this: Remove lid, disconnect control panel from system board and with the lid still removed, use the 'i' button on the rear and hold it in for 20-30 seconds and see if the system powers up.

Have you checked CPU and DIMM sockets for any bent pins?

With the system having error VLT0204 The system board fail-safe voltage is outside of range, I have seen that need a system board replacement many times.

There is a sticker on the system board near the DIMM sockets that has a DP/N number. That would be the part number for your system board.

I would also recommend save a copy of your iDRAC license, export it in the DRAC License section.

@Dell -Charles R Thanks for the response
I have tried with the minimum to post configuration and with the control pannel disconnected however I am getting the same two errors and the following new one:
"VLT0304 : CPU 1 VSA PG voltage is outside of range. "
I have also checked both cpu sockets and i dont see any bent pins, same for the DIMM sockets.

Hello Shirleen,

Thank you for the update.

The minimum to POST parts is as few as I can make it.

You could test swapping out parts if you have other known good parts you can sub in.

Were you able to find the sticker with the system board part number?
