Fan 3A configuration mismatch

I have purchased a R640 2nd hand.

I have the following fan mismatch errors in iDrac. How do I identify what fans are 3A,3B etc

Fan 3A configuration mismatch.
Fan 3B configuration mismatch.
Fan 4A configuration mismatch.
Fan 4B configuration mismatch.

Running a diagnostics test passes but it does flag these fans

diags.jpeg

Opening up the chassis I see 2 x performance fans (0KG52T) but the rest are standard (0RG2X2)

Does this mean these fans have a fault or just that someone has swapped out standard for these high perf ones?

Im assuming the critical status in iDrac is a result of this?

Whats best course of action here?

TIA
Dave

All fans on the server need to be of same type. Mostly you are seeing this issue as you have different types of fan installed on the server

Hello dave_mcl,

Like Shine states :Mixing of standard and high performance cooling fans is not supported.

It looks like, as you suspect, the performance fans have been installed when it should have standard fans.

If you replace them with standard fans that should resolve the issue.

OK thanks, just realised there are 2 fans per housing unit hence the A & B description

Thanks again.

Given the difficulty in getting Dell parts in Australia - I assume I could replace the 6 standard fans with high performance ones and that would also work - it just needs to be a consistent part across the entire fan row?

Whether a system need Standard or High Performance depends on the system configuration. Generally using all high performance should not show up any issues

DELL-Shine K, how can "system configuration" be adjusted?

I'm running with just one CPU. It seems silly to have all eight high performance fans. In fact, it seems silly to have eight fans. Can I change the "system configuration" to only install fans for CPU 1?

Hello, I'm afraid that is not possible.

How about adjusting the system configuration to change from high performance (KG52T) fans to standard (RG2X2) fans (which I assume are quieter)? Is that possible? How would I do that?

Hello as far as I know, you can't mix fan types. Why would you need to change to the standard, may I ask?

The standard fans are presumably quieter (right?), and they're a lot cheaper on eBay.

I got the system board for free (because it has a dead PERC slot), I have only one CPU in it, and I don't expect to work it very hard.

Quieter would be very much appreciated for a machine which will be running in my home office.

I current have four standard fans and four high performance fans. So if I have to make them match, I'll need to buy some replacements,

Hi, thanks for your feedback. BIOS allows you to select the fan speed mode and the fan offset (no offset, low, medium, or high). iDRAC6 allows you to enable or disable the custom cooling fan options. You cannot mix fan types or reduce the number of fans in the system. If you want to change the fan type from high performance to standard, you will need to replace all eight fans with the standard ones.

How does one change the system configuration from high performance (KG52T) fans to standard (RG2X2) fans?

How much quieter are the standard fans?
