power edge Raid arrays

hi all, i have a poweredge 2950 running as a cad workstation, its running 6 hard drives set up in 3 Raid 1's.

rather foolishly when I set it all up I used 2 73gb 15k drives for the boot drive so now im running out of space.....

i have 2 300gb 10K drives that i could spare to use as a boot drive, or i might get a pair of SSD's i know SSD's are far faster but in the real world the 15K drives in raid 1 seam to work just as well for what im doing. will the 10K drives be noticeably slower?

i don't want to reinstall everything, is it possible to replace one of the 73GB drives with a larger one, rebuild the array, then replace the second drive?

Yes, it is possible, but the process is not that simple. You could only do it if you used the same drive type(SAS, SATA, SSD, etc). You can't mix drive types in a virtual disk. After the drives are rebuilt into the virtual disk you would then need to retag the array, this is not possible on all of our controllers. If you are able to perform those steps then you will need to expand or create a new partition with the operating system to use the new space.

Retagging a virtual disk is not something you are likely to find in any manual. It is a last resort troubleshooting step to attempt to recover a virtual disk. It can be used for other purposes though. You should be able to search the forums for more information on the process.
