PowerEdge R440 LED panel fault

Hi, I have a server showing this error condition in the iDRAC logs "unable to access the front LED panel because of a hardware fault". The server is running well otherwise. Has anybody had experience with this fault condition?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Harry44,

The issue can stem from several potential causes:

    Suggested Steps (Systematic Approach)

1: Verify the Error via iDRAC

    • Log into iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller).
    • Navigate to System → Overview → Hardware → Front Panel.
    • Check the Lifecycle Controller logs and System Event Log (SEL) for specific error codes related to the front panel (e.g., FP0001, SYS1006).
    • Note down the exact error message and error code.

If nothing is seen in the LCD panel, proceed to step 5

    2: Update Firmware

    • Update the following to the latest versions from Dell Support:
      • iDRAC Firmware
      • BIOS/UEFI
      • Lifecycle Controller Firmware
      • CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device) Firmware
    • This can be done via:
      • iDRAC web interface → Maintenance → System Update
      • Dell Repository Manager
      • Dell OpenManage or SupportAssist
    • Reboot after updates and recheck.

3: Run ePSA / Dell Diagnostics

    • During boot, press F12 and select Diagnostics.
    • Run the embedded Pre-boot System Assessment (ePSA) to identify any hardware faults.
    • Note any error codes returned.

    4: Power Cycle the Server

    • Perform a full cold reboot:
      1. Gracefully shut down the OS.
      2. Power off the server via the power button or iDRAC.
      3. Disconnect the power cables from both PSUs.
      4. Wait 30–60 seconds to drain residual power.
      5. Reconnect power cables and power on the server.
    • Check if the front panel becomes responsive.

5: Reseat the Front Control Panel Cable

    • Power off and unplug the server.
    • Slide the server out of the rack (if rack-mounted).
    • Remove the top cover (using the latch).
    • Locate the front control panel cable — it connects from the front panel board to the system board (connector J_CP1 or similar on the system board).
    • Carefully disconnect and reseat the cable at both ends:
      • Front panel board end.
      • System board end.
    • Inspect the cable for:
      • Bent pins
      • Fraying or cuts
      • Burn marks
    • Reassemble and power on. Test the front panel.

6: Reseat the Front Information Tag / LCD Module

    • The R440 has a slide-out information tag on the front that includes the status LED/LCD.
    • Carefully remove and reseat this module.
    • Ensure it clicks firmly into place.

    7: Clear System Event Logs

    • After reseating and firmware updates, clear the SEL via iDRAC:
      • Maintenance → System Event Log → Clear Log
    • Reboot the server and monitor for recurrence.

8: If reseating didn't resolve the issue, you might want to consider replacing the Front Panel LCD (which will be on the bezel of the server) as a start.
