PowerEdge r730 video/idrac issue.

Please help to a newbie. I've bought PowerEdge r730 (used) from a local auction as a "good enough machine to start learning in the field". Upon arrival I popped up the lid and realised that the machine is brand new. Not a trace of dust anywhere. However, my amazement didn't last long. After plugging in to monitor I got "No signal on HDMI". So both back and front VGA ports don't show any activity on the monitor. I'm using VGA to HDMI adaptor. Not sure if it's faulty, it's brand new from a store. I suppose it's fine.

Ok let's try idrac. Hook up to router, set up static IP, reset idrac password (holding i button until fans start spinning crazy. root -> initial0 - wrong password. calvin? Nope.

So, I'm unable to go to BIOS due to video signal bug and unable to connect via idrac.

Any ideas what may be done in my situation?

Dew_point.

Regarding the VGA issue, I would try using a VGA based monitor, as I am not seeing any VGA to hdmi adapters listed as supported on the R730. One thing you can do to ensure it isn't the server is to take the server to its minimum to post configuration, which is removing everything externally and internally except for the following;

  • System board
  • One power supply unit
  • One processor (CPU) in socket CPU1
  • One memory module (DIMM) installed in socket A1
  • Left control panel (for power button functionality)

Try booting under that configuration and see if the video works, if not then it is likely the adapter is failed or unsupported, or both.

Now regarding the idrac, what you can do is run a racadm racreset cfg -rc command and that will reset the idrac to defaults, including the credentials back to default.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply. After careful review I found out that I'm using HDMI to VGA cable which isn't working both ways. I grabbed old school VGA monitor from local market today and successfully logged in the system. It's working fine now. Thank you for your help.
