R620 don't start at all after install Oracle Linux 7.9 --> exception during the UEFI pre-boot environment.

Hi,

I have problem with one of my serwers. I will describe the situation:
I had the RedHat 6.5 on this machine. The system was installed on external array DELL MD3620F. I decide to install on this server new OS: Oracle Linux 9.5. Everything was OK, the OL9.5 installed succesfully, the system start without any problems. Unfortunately, it turned out that I am not able to install Oracle 12C on this system, and I have to install an older version of Oracle Linux, 7.9, on this server. So i installed the OL7.9, and after that the system don't start.
Now i can't start server at all, i can't go into BIOS, can't go into Livecycle Controller, can't go info Boot Menu.

Can anybody help me to reanimate the server?

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.

https://www.dell.com/community/en/direct-messaging

I'd ask to check iDRAC logs for any errors.

For example something similar for a newer server-

PowerEdge R760 install ESXi 7.0.3 failed and have red screen issue

And as you might be well aware, Oracle Linux is not validated on R620

Respectfully,

@DELL-Young E Hello, thx for your reply! Here are the log from iDrac7 Enterprise (Overview->Server->Logs:
Logs:

Fri Mar 28 2025 16:45:04 The process of installing an operating system or hypervisor is successfully completed.
Fri Mar 28 2025 15:02:24 The process of installing an operating system or hypervisor is started and is in progress.
Thu Mar 27 2025 17:17:48 The process of installing an operating system or hypervisor is successfully completed.
Thu Mar 27 2025 16:38:26 The process of installing an operating system or hypervisor is started and is in progress.
Thu Mar 27 2025 16:29:07 Log cleared.
The first 2 lines (28 mar) are after install OL7.9 (the server don't start either into BIOS, Lifecycle controller or Boot Manager)
the nest 2 lines (27 mar) are after install OL9.5 (the server and system boot without problem)
Lifecycle Log:
And yes, I know that OL7.9 is not validated on R620, but I have 2 other R620 with OL7.9 and they works fine...
To sum up, I would like to be able to restore the server to a state where I could try to install any other system, e.g. RH6. or boot from an external medium such as a CD or Pendrive

M.topczewski,

With the OS not being supported we are limited on the support we can provide. I would start with removing the hardware the OS is installed at, HDDs, USB, etc. Then as far as it's working on others but not this one, would make me consider checking the BIOS and iDrac level of the servers it works on, and compare them to the system it isnt working on, as this one may be at a different/older/newer version that isn't conducive to supporting that OS. If there is a difference you can try to match them to see if it will work, but again we don't support that OS.

Thank you for your advice. The problem has been solved. I turned off the server. I reinitialized the volume on the external Dell MD3620F array, from which the server is going to start. Additionally, I removed the local SSD drives, unplugged the cables from both power supplies. I waited about 5 minutes. I connected the cable to only one of the power supplies and started the server. After these actions, I managed to enter the Lifecycle controller. From the LC level, I initiated the OL7.9 installation. The installation went without problems. After the reboot, the server started. I turned it off again, inserted the local drives, connected the second power supply to the power supply and started the server. Everything works!

Thank you!
Best regards,
Mariusz
