Samsung 990 Pro NVMe on Dell Ultra 4x M.2 NVMe SSDs to x16 PCIe Adapter Card 80G5N 6N9RH TX9JH DPWC400
Hello Everyone,
As the title states, has anyone here tested the latest Samsung 990 Pro NVMe on Dell Ultra 4x M.2 NVMe SSDs to x16 PCIe Adapter Card?
Part Numbers: 80G5N 6N9RH TX9JH DPWC400
As per Dell's official website,
- Dell Ultra-Speed Drive card is a multi-port M.2 PCIe interposer card that converts PCIe to M.2 (NGFF) to support NVMe SSD*
Since Samsung's 990 Pro NVMe's are not NGFF.

Hello, I'm just adding this to clarify the card is for workstations, not servers.

Re: Since Samsung's 990 Pro NVMe's are not NGFF.
Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD with M.2 form factor = NGFF (next generation form factor)
For this topic query, Yes, the Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD will work with Dell Ultra-Speed adapter.
Note: For multiple drives to work, the adapter must be installed on PCIe x8 slot (x2 drives) or PCIe x16 slot (x4 drives) on selected systems with motherboard that supports bifurcation.

Hello @DELL-Young E
I appreciate your clarification, but my query was not about whether the card would run/support servers.
I already had the chance to look at the SS you shared.
I specifically asked whether the latest Samsung 990 Pro NVMe would run/support the card and has anyone tried/tested yet because as per my findings, I haven't found any literature or video on the internet that someone has tested/run those latest NVMe's on the card.
Furthermore, I would like to seek more clarification from you on the card/adapter:
Since, regarding your SS shared the card is built to work on Workstations and not servers, does that mean it will not work on an x16 PCIe slot on a Dell R740xd server? I mean would it not get detected on the server? or would it get detected but with limited connectivity?
I understand that you're trying to explain that the card was not built for servers but only for workstations but if we still plug it in on a R740xd x16 PCIe slot, would it work on its 100% capacity and functionality? or would we have any kind of challenges/limitations?
Yet, my question still stands there whether the card would support 4x Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe's?

Hi @Chino de Oro
Thanks for the reply and clarification.
I had the same understanding as well but I got a little shaky after I found the following from ChatGPT 4o:
ChatGPT said:
No, the Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD is not an NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor) SSD. It is an M.2 NVMe SSD.
Here’s the distinction:
Samsung 990 Pro
NGFF
So, while the Samsung 990 Pro is physically an M.2 SSD, it would not typically be referred to as "NGFF" in modern documentation. It is more accurately described as an M.2 NVMe SSD.
However;
ChatGPT said:
Yes, the Dell PCIe x16 NVMe Adapter (part number 80G5N) should support the Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD, provided that the following conditions are met:
Key Compatibility Factors:
Form Factor:
Interface:
BIOS and Bifurcation:
Thermal Considerations:
Final Recommendation:
If your system supports PCIe bifurcation and the 80G5N card is properly installed in a compatible PCIe x16 slot, the Samsung 990 Pro will work perfectly. Just keep in mind that its performance will depend on whether the system supports PCIe Gen 4 (for full speeds) or runs at PCIe Gen 3.

As you can see, the lengthy AI answer is basically the same as mine two sentences. The adapter supports Samsung 990 Pro SSD.
About NGFF, there is a term GIGO that may explain why AIs will provide different answers at time. I looked up on Google and received the AI answer as below.
