Server shuts down

Hi

I have a PowerEdge R720, it is running two 8 core processors and 96GB RAM.

I have installed Win 2012 server on it.

The server will run, sometimes for a couple of days, then for no apparent reason will shut down. I then have to manually restart the server.

All the logs look OK, I have looked in Windows event log and also server manager, but there are no issues showing.

After reading on the web I was suspecting a PSU issue so I tried to update the firmware, but it would not accept the update and was showing as a failed update in Lifecycle control.

I then tried to update through Lifecycle control but could not get it to read the CD drive.

The server originally came with 2 PSU, but one started flashing orange so I removed it, I am now running with one PSU, if I can resolve this issue I will replace the failed one. (the server still shuts down with one PSU installed)

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

Or where else could I look to see if the server is reporting an error?

Appreciate any help.

Many thanks

Holroyd

Holroyd,

Are you seeing anything like Abnormal Shutdowns in the Windows Event Log? If so go to Computer - System Properties - Advanced System Settings - Startup and Recovery, then from there ensure that you remove the checkmark in Automatically Restart. That way if there is blue screen or such it will remain until we manually reboot. If you do see a BSOD then please relay to me the STOP code you see.

In regards to the update, what specific power supplies are you using, and how did you try to run the update?

Let me know.

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for your help.

No I don't see any abnormal shutdowns, there is nothing, nothing in Windows event log, everything looks OK

When it does shut down it never restarts itself, the automatically restart button was ticked, but it never restarts. It just shuts down, the only way to start it again is manually press start button on server.

Re PSU, I downloaded the firmware file from Dell support - version 07 09 49  I ran it from Windows and when I view in Lifecycle it says update failed.

Everything on the server looks normal, it just as if someone logged in and shut it down, I am pretty sure this is not happening, but that is what it appears like.

I have checked all security and AV, everything looks good.

I can see in event log right up to the time it goes off line and everything is OK

I have uploaded a screen shot of event log, the server shut itself down on the 7th March, I left it for a couple of weeks due to not having time to look at it, started it up again on 30th March, but the shut down on the 7th it did it by itself, it just shut down.

kind regards

Holroyd

the later- high function DRACs can cause some strange behavior. If you have no errors reported anywhere- I would investigate the DRAC, especially if you are getting jittery lifecycle controller issues. Not a bad idea to run the updates directly from Dell's FTP site via LifeCycle controller- But you may try a manual DRAC update from within windows- An easy first move is to set the DRAC to defaults and reconfigure lan parameters if needed. See if the behavior persists. -If the DRAC update won't go through, set it to defaults first.

-This sounds like a system firmware issue- likely LC or DRAC, recommend updating both along with system BIOS if out of date. -If the system is relatively new in production, it may be worth reseating internal components. (remember to be static safe and review manuals before ripping out parts- the hardware manual details the removal of every component).

--The power supply updates are typically the most finicky- and dangerous. The system will power down for up to 10 minutes when the update is successful- Removing power from the system during this time bricks the power supplies.

I would suggest verifying the server is completely up to date, that is the BIOS, IDrac, Chipset, as well as the raid controller.. I do agree with JW in regards to using the FTP, if possible, to fully update the server until current. If you access the iDrac, when/what is the last logged error  you see in the Hardware log?

I had a similar situation with a Dell R340.  Found it to be a computer name object in AD.  I had reused the existing name object.  Once I delete the computer name object in AD and created a new one and added the server back to the domain the problem went away.

Hello, Wrik Jana.

I'm sorry to hear that you are facing the same problem of automatic shutdown issue with your Dell PowerEdge R740xd Rack Server. This issue could be caused by various factors, such as hardware failure, firmware corruption, power supply issues, or operating system errors. Based on the web search results, here are some possible solutions that you can try:

  • Check the iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) for any error messages or warnings. The iDRAC is a system management tool that allows you to monitor and troubleshoot your server remotely. You can access the iDRAC through a web browser or a command line interface. If the iDRAC is not responding or rebooting, you may need to update its firmware or reset it using an SD card1.
  • Check the power options in the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) and set them to maximum performance. The BIOS is a software that controls the basic functions of your server, such as booting, hardware configuration, and power management. You can access the BIOS by pressing F2 during the server startup. Some users have reported that changing the power options from DAPC (Dell Active Power Controller) to custom mode with maximum performance and disabling C1E and C-state options solved their random reboot issue2.
  • Check the Lifecycle Controller for any CPU divide by 0 error. The Lifecycle Controller is a feature that simplifies the deployment, update, and maintenance of your server. You can access the Lifecycle Controller by pressing F10 during the server startup. If you see a CPU divide by 0 error, you may need to update the Lifecycle Controller firmware or disable it in the BIOS3.

If none of these solutions work, you may need to contact your local Dell technical support in India for further assistance. You can find the contact information for your region on the Dell website. I hope this helps you resolve your issue.
