Add new SSD "SAS" drives of Large capacity to "existing SATA drives RAID 5" on Dell PowerEdge R730XD.

Hello Experts,

We have a Dell PowerEdge R730XD server equipped with a PERC H730 mini RAID controller. Currently, our capacity is running low, and we plan to add more 2.5" SSDs to the existing RAID volume.

We are using 14 SATA Seagate Nytro 1.92 TB SSDs, configured in a RAID 5 array. There are a few empty front slots that I would like to fill with larger capacity SAS SSDs instead of SATA drives.

Our goal is to increase the capacity of the current RAID 5 volume by incorporating larger SAS drives.

Is it possible to install 15.36TB 2.5” external SAS SSDs on this server?

I would like to know:
Is it compatible or feasible to mix existing 1.92TB SATA drives with the new larger capacity (15.36TB) SAS drives?

Additionally, it would be helpful if you could provide the part numbers of compatible 15.36TB SAS 2.5” SSD drives from any vendor (Seagate, Samsung, etc.) that can be used with this server.
Regards

Hi,

Unfortunately, PM893 MZ7L37T6HBLA is not compatible with R730XD. I cannot find any Dell part associated with MZ7L37T6HBLA. There isn't any 8TB SATA 2.5" drive for R730XD.

I have understand that you donst ask for HDDs. I only tell you that you cant mixed certain types together within a single Disk/Raidgroup and Joey also confirm that even SAS+SATA cant mixed together.

Dell will never(because they cannot) tell you if a non Dell branded drive will work within one of there products.

Maybe Dell can post the supported drive (sizes) for the R730xd.  Because its an older system i would not expect that large SSDs exisits in that time period.

This will not work as expected because within a RAID(Disk) Group the smallest disk size is the base and you will waste a lot of space, and money, because the you cant allocate the unused space as capacity.

You can only group media from the same type for a Raid/Diskgroup which means you cant combine HDD and SSD together, Iam not sure if the same is valid for SAS and SATA(i dont think so.... but you should read the PERC manual about that)

I have my doubt that for a 13rd. Gen Server there was a certified 15TB SSD. Your Server is more than 8 years old and spending so much money into an old bunker doesnt make sence.

Hello,

Unfortunately, you can't mix SATA with SAS in the same VD. Ref: https://dell.to/40FBV7J

DPN# 5WPFT is the only 15TB SAS drive appear in the compatible search for R730XD. Please take note that, as what Joerg mentioned, if you were to use (for an example) a 4TB SATA drive to extend RAID5 of 14 drive, you would waste the addition 2TB space as the base array uses 1.9TB array configuration.

@Origin3k   Hi Joerg ,

Thanks for the reply to this query.

FYI.. we are not using HDDs but SSDs in existing RAID 5 on the server.

(i.e. SATA Seagate Nytro 1.92 TB SSDs)

I wanted to confirm if new SAS drives of bigger size(7/15tb) can be used instead of SATA.

So as per https://dell.to/40FBV7J  Looks like SAS Can not be used.  Thanks for confirming this.

Hence , It appears , adding ( 4 TB size SSD  SATA disks.),  can be a choice.  although there will be wastage of space in extending the RAID5.

I also found  Samsung SATA 7.68TB SSD If it is Dell PowerEdge R730XD compatible, ?

https://semiconductor.samsung.com/us/ssd/datacenter-ssd/pm893/

Please advise and confirm so I can mark it as resolved.
