Perc h740p mini - battery

Hi I recently had a failed h740p on a 740XD server - I purchased  battery replacement but supplier gave me a h730 1.8wh instead of a 2.8wh battery- the supplier said it did not matter and it would do the same job. My perc is still not showing on boot up or in bios -

Can anybody advise if the 2.8 would cause perc not to show up or is it likely a dead perc -

are there any magic tests to confirm the deadness of the perc as its an expensive replace? thanks in advance for you advise

Hello Alan,

I would like to make sure; Did you have a failed H740P mini controller or failed battery on the controller?

The controller should run without a battery. It should put your virtual disks in Write-Through instead of Write-Back mode so that it does not use the battery backed cache with no battery.

For troubleshooting; Try removing the controller. Remove the battery, Reseat controller and cables and check results if it is detected.

These next two steps could help us narrow down to the controller or the slot:

Test the controller in another system if you have one available.

Test this system with another PERC H740P mini if you have one available.

When you are able to get the PERC to show up, then make sure the firmware is up to date

@Dell -Charles R thanks Charles

latest patches were applied- see original fault report attached- after this battery was replaced but we so not see controller at all in bios under integrated controller nor do we see any config option on boot for perc- we do see the other boss adaptor

Hello Alan

I see Device not detected PERC H740P Mini (Embedded).

This looks to be either a bad controller or system board (bad PERC mini slot)

Just making sure here. If you Power on and press <F2> select System Setup > Device Settings you do not see the PERC listed?

Take a look over the installation to confirm you have the process correct to install the controller

For troubleshooting; Try removing the controller. Remove the battery, Reseat controller and cables and check results if it is detected.

These next two steps could help us narrow down to the controller or the slot:

Test the controller in another system if you have one available.

Test this system with another PERC H740P mini if you have one available.

thanks, I already reseated h740p mini and also removed and reseated the daughter card it slots into - no sign of life at all so i am guessing failed board. I don't have a similar server to try I just didnt want to start replacing the h740 as its an expensive part without being 99% if i dont have the raid controller installed should i get pass through of the drives in non raid format with the cable on the daughterboard - or is it a futile exercise - sorry if my question sounds uninformed in advance!!! and i appreciate the assist

Hello Alan

No problem. It doesn't sound uninformed to me.

Unfortunately if the PERC is not detected then you would not get any pass-through option in the controller.
