R720XD internal HBA controller
Looking at this page : http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers/
It says that the R720XD supports internal 6GB SAS HBA controller, however this doesn't appear on the build pages of the website, and our account team doesn't seem to know of it. We are being offered H310 PERC and H710 PERC - neither of which are suitable.
We need drives passed through to the O/S - no raid, no jbod, no raid 0 on 1 drive - we want the raw drives.
The H310 can do this, but it's documented as being broken: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/906/p/19480834/20249968.aspx and the perc support matrix has removed it as a feature.
I have found documentation on LSI's website stating that the LSI SAS 9207-8i PCIe card is supported in the R720xd: http://www.lsi.com/sep/Pages/Dell.aspx
I also found this: http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/noindex/Dell/SAS_SATA_6G_P15/Dell_QIG.pdf which seems to be Dell documentation on how to install the controller.
We'd really like this controller, or another suitable HBA controller for 24 drives to be in the server when it arrives from the factory.
Can anyone shed any light ?

Just to update this thread. The R720XD can be fitted at the factory by Dell with an LSI SAS 9207-8i PCIe
Just ask your sales rep :)

Hello Tom
The SAS HBA is designed for tape storage devices. This is the user's guide for it: http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_dell_adapters/dell-sas-hba-6gbps_User%27s%20Guide_en-us.pdf That is most likely why your sales reps are having a hard time finding it as an internal SAS controller. I don't know if it will work for your purpose.
It looks like the LSI would be your best option. It would have to be ordered through a sales rep, and you may have to configure it as a CFI order(Customer Factory Integration). Most non-Dell branded components installed at the factory require CFI orders.
Thanks

Thanks for that information Daniel, I thought that may be the case.
We can't be the first customer requiring non-raid in an R720XD as these are the cloud builders machines of choice!
Is there anyway you can find out if there is a plan to replace the H310 with something that works correctly any time soon?
I have a feeling that people are buying these machines with H310s when they aren't fit for purpose.
For example, one of your partners http://onapp.com/dell are recommending to buy R720XDs with H310 for use with their internal drive system which explicitly requires non-raid : cdn.onapp.com/.../dell_onapp_storage_package.pdf

I have not received any information about plans for replacing the H310. I have heard customers complain of poor performance on RAID 0/1/10 on the H310, and I've heard people post really good performance on the H310. The information I have been provided is that the performance is limited to RAID 5/50 and JBOD/non-RAID. If there is a RAID 5 created on the controller then performance will suffer across the entire controller.
According to the information I have this is the state of the H310:
The performance issues on the H310 cannot be corrected with firmware updates.
Thanks

My responses aren't showing up, so trying again.
So you ended up getting 3 of these cards for your 24 drives, correct?
