Use onboard sata on c6420
We have some c6420 that came with the H730P Mini PERC and its connected to two SAS HDD. It is possible to add two SATA drives for it (there are space in the c6400 for that sled) and have the sata drives connected to the on-board sata controller? If not, can we disable the H730P and use just the sata drive?
This is mainly to test Storage Space Direct with does not like the drives being attached to the H730P.

Hi,
I believe that is possible, by removing the PERC mezz card and replace the cabling with an onboard SATA link cable. But I can't confirm that it could work as I don't have a test unit to check with. In the part search tool, I found 2 types of cable. 34GNN is with M.2 SATA x16 riser cable and CH4V0 do not have it.
34GNN ASSY,CBL,MB,LINK,SL,2.5N,C6420
CH4V0 ASSY,CBL,MB,LINK,2.5/3.5,C6420

M.2 SATA x16 riser connection: http://del.ly/612170KtJv
Please note that, you are unable to mix SATA and SAS within a virtual disk.

Thanks for the reply. Is the M.2 SATA x16 riser and cable needed if we just plan on using the sata drives in the enclosure up front?
As an alternative, is it possible to get a HBA330 module and just do a drop in replacement for the H730P that is currently in place?

yc_meat,
To answer all your questions, yes you should be able to disable to the H730p and run on the onboard (from initial post), and alternatively it loos like you could drop in the HBA330 for it, but I am not 100% on sled cabling changes that may be needed on that one.

Thanks for letting me know about the HBA.
Would you know if the M.2 SATA x16 riser and cable is needed if we just plan on using the sata drives in the enclosure up front?

Hi,
Not that I know of. The M.2 SATA x16 riser is to accommodate M.2 SATA drive installation. The cable is needed for the riser. If you plan not to have the riser, then the cable is not needed. Hence, I would say you only need CH4V0 if you are planning to use the onboard RAID chipset, Embedded C621.
