Wrong calculation of Dell Perc H740P Mini RAID

Hello,

We have a new Dell Server R7515 with Dell Perc H740P Mini RAID Controller.

In the Raid configuration, I have noticed that it creates the Virtual Disks in a wrong size.

For example: If I create

1GB virtual disk, it creates 1025.5MB

10GB virtual disk, it creates 10GB

64GB virtual disk, it creates 63.999GB

If select MB and create a virtual disk with MB, for example, 65536mb, it creates again 63.999GB.

I would like to know what is wrong with this RAID Controller.

Hello Elvin,

This is due to formatting and file system overhead and is normal for all drive manufacturers that I know of.

This articles can give you more information:

Seagate article:

Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label?

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

The article you have shared is due to the formatting of the drive. But our scenario is different. This problem doesn't happen on the other model of Dell servers, it happens only on this model of Dell server with Perc H740P Mini RAID.

How can I precisely create a virtual disk of 64GB?

Hello,

from where you see that it is 63.999 GB? Do you check in the OS?

When you try to create 64GB what you see in the controller BIOS?

And also, is the firmware up to date?

Thanks

@DELL-Marco B When the server starts, I press F2 and in the menu I select Device Settings / Raid Configuration Management / Integrated Raid Controller and I create Raid Virtual Disks. If create a Virtual Disk of 64GB, it shows 63.999GB in the Physical Disk Management. This problem happens only on this server with this Raid Controller.

That should be something related to what Charles wrote and the shared article.

Anyway I suggest you to check if there is some firmware update for the PERC.

Thanks
