Poweredge 400sc - Loading operating system
Hi Guys
I recently purchased a poweredge 400sc with no operating system. I loaded the sytem support CD that came with the PC. I then tried to install windows 2000 pro and I'm getting an error message that this is not a valid operating system. I have a feeling I was niave in my purchase. Is there something proprietary that I need to be loading in?
Thankyou
Juan

Hi,
Win2000 Professional is not formally validated on any PowerEdge Server. The system support CD will only support validated Operating System.
Professional will probably work fine on the PowerEdge 400 SC, you just have to install it manually, pressing F6 when prompted if you have a raid controller installed.
These are the latest system upgrades for the PowerEdge 400 SC available on the File Library at Dell.com:
System BIOS, English, PowerEdge 400SC, A04
FileName: BR68334.exe [608 KB]
Release Date: 11/24/2003

Intel 875P Chipset , Driver, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, PowerEdge 400SC, v.5.0.1.1015, A01
FileName: PE400scA01.exe [1 MB]
Release Date: 7/2/2003

Hi Mark
Thankyou for the help. How would I know if I have a raid controller installed, and at what stage of the installation process would I press F6.
What I'm getting now is a series of screens starting with "set date and TIme" and then select OS, configure hardware, enter OS info, install summary, and install OS.
Also, where can I find some more detail on what a server is. I had no idea when I purchased this system that it was different from a "normal" PC.
Thanks again
Juan

Hi Juan,
If you will provide your Service Tag Number, I can confirm if you ordered a Raid controller with your PowerEdge 400 SC. The Raid controller is a $299 option.
Do not use the System Support CD. Simply boot the PowerEdge 400 SC with the Win2000 PRO Cd in the drive. Watch the screen, it will prompt you to press F6 to load 3rd party drivers (if you do not have the raid controller installed skip this step).
Just follow the prompts and Win2000 should install without issue.

Thanks again for the response. The service # is 2S0FN31. However, I checked the invoice and there is nothing on there termed a "raid controller". I've already installed the system support CD but I will find a way to clear the info and try what you suggested. I'll try loading 2K pro again.
N.B. Can you direct me to an explaination of how these "Server" PC's differ from a "regular" PC? Also, how does the software differ? Windows Server 2k verses Win 2k.

Hi Juan,
In general a server is designed to be locked in a closet and accessed over the network. It job is to "serve" data and applications to the users on the network. Most servers will have redundant hardware such as multiple power supplies, fans, hard drives. Some systems even have redundant memory arrays. These redundant features allow some hardware to fail and be replaced, not interrupting the users in any way. The PowerEdge 400 SC does not exactly fit this profile, but it is designed as an entry level server and is only tested with server Operating Systems and functions.
A Server Operating System is different from a Client Operating System in the same philosophy. Server Operating System is designed to provide services to the network users. Priority is given to background services and requests from the network. Client Operating Systems give priority to applications in use by the operator.
