Missing VirtualDisk on bootup, status Foreign on all

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with DAS storage attached (MD1000) I rebooted the server to apply window updates (win2008), on restart BIOS detected a VirtualDisk was missing and wanted me to continue or raid Config and import conf .... I continued on :(

After startup, there was storage missing... a volume (RAID5). I opened Dell OpenManage and checked the status on the storage. Everything was fine. No failures, nothing degraded. There were no warnings, even no external hdd warning lights on the any drives. The missing virtualdisk is fine and "ready". Except that All physical disks (6 out of 7 total) for the missing raid where marked as "foreign" EXCEPT for ONE disk the dedicated hot spare.

The failed VirtualDisk resides on the MD1000, as well as another VirtualDisk which is currently fine.

Can I still use the IMPORT foregn config to save the virtualdisk or am I too late?

Will I have to use CLEAR foreign config and rebuild the array? And if I do use CLEAR on all 6 foreign hdds, will this effect the working VirtualDisk that resides on the same controller? (Perc5)

And lastly, how or why would I lose the virtualdisk this way? The logs  only mention a failed battery. I do not want to rebuild and have this happen again. Is it the RAID card? Battery? All hdds are fine... below are the only event logs I could find...

  1. The current driver version 2.20.00.64 (percsas) is older than the required driver version 2.24.00.64 (percsas) for a controller of model 0x1F0C: Controller 0 (PERC 6/i Integrated)
  2. The current driver version 2.20.00.64 (percsas) is older than the required driver version 2.24.00.64 (percsas) for a controller of model 0x1F01: Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)
  3. The controller battery needs to be replaced.: Battery 0 Controller 1
  4. Device failed: Battery 0 Controller 1
  5. Controller event log: VDs missing at boot: 00: Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)
  6. Controller event log: Battery needs replacement - SOH Bad: Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)
  7. Controller event log: Current capacity of the battery is below threshold: Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)
  8. Controller event log: BBU disabled; changing WB virtual disks to WT: Controller 1 (PERC 5/E Adapter)

Hello logman0u812,

What you are going to want to do is to import the foreign configuration on the 6 drives.  Once the import is complete then you will need to reboot the server and then go into the controller bios and confirm that the virtual disk is online & ready.  Once the virtual disk is online & ready let the server boot to windows and you should be able to see the virtual disk again with all the data.

You will only use the clear foreign configuration as a last option as if it doesn’t work then you will need to rebuild the array.

It is hard to say why the array went offline in this way without looking at the logs for the PERC5/e.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

In Open Manage controller tasks execute "Import/Recover Foreign Config"? Or use "Import" from the controller bios on startup?

I ordered another Perc card, a PERC6/E... would Replacing/Upgrading the Perc5 card be the exact same process?

Thanks.
