The main thing you need to consider before moving the MD1000 over to the other server is what controller is in the R610. The controllers that are support and guaranteed to work with the MD1000 is the Perc5/E and the Perc 6/E. If both systems will be using the same kind of controller it is best to ensure the driver and firmware level is the same on the 2 cards.

When doing anything like this I always recommend getting a backup just to be on the safe side. As far as the actual process goes you are correct as you will need to go into the raid Bios and it will see the array as a foreign config. Once you import the foreign config then you should be able to see all the data. Like I mentioned the main concern is the raid card that is in the new server.

Please let me know if you have any questions as I would be happy to assist you.

The current controller is a 5/E.  The controller on the 'new' server is a 6/E.

So different cards, but both supported, so that's okay then?

Thanks Kenny!

Ugh, this is beginning to sound kind of intimidating!  Fingers are crossed that we can just do an import!

Thanks Kenny!

Can you explain what a retag is please?

Like I mentioned we are here if you need anything going forward.

They are both supported but since you are going from an older controller to the new controller I have seen in the past where it will not allow you to import the foreign config. If that is the case you would have to do a retag on the drives to get them back online. I would still recommend getting a backup before doing this just to be safe.

If you have to do a retag you will disconnect the array and then delete the VD that is stored in cache on the controller. Then connect the array and power on into the Bios. From here you will create a new VD "EXACTLY" as it was created before. When creating the new VD you do NOT want to do the initialize.  This will recreate the RAID headers and correctly configure the controller. You want to make sure the drive are in the same order and when creating the array make sure the drives are selected in the same order as they were originally.

Hi, I'm about to do the same thing but the other way round. I'm need to move the MD1000 from PE/6 to PE/5.

When you say that the config needs to be imported, do you mean I have to export the config first from the originating server and then import on the new one?
