Single or Dual Perc controler ie: Optimal setup for Split Backplane 220 with single server
Hi,
My subject may sound a bit obscure but a description will probably explain things a bit better.
We currently have one 2650 and a 220s (split backplane, fully loaded).
Previously one half of the 220s was being used with a second server which was decommissioned and we now have connected the second half of the 220 to the second channel of Perc 3/DC. (Each channel on the Perc controller controlling one half of the 220s)
We still have the other Perc controller which isn't being used. so my question is am I going to get better performance by having 2 Perc 3/DC controllers, one handling one half of the 220S each or stick with the current setup of a single Perc 3/DC looking after both channels?

PS - My gut feeling is the single controller especially when transferring data between each side of the array as the data stays within the controller rather than going out of the card, through the motherboard/bus and back through the second card.

You are right about not wanting extra traffic on the system bus, the raid adapter's bus would handle the traffic more efficiently, ( with only one 220s) . Also the added IRQ requests of the second adapter would add I/O delays.

One card would still be better, your idea is to separate the logs and the database for better performance, which is good, but the separation idea for performance is to get the database and logs on separate disk sets. On a single adapter the data would transfer more efficiently within the card's bus, among the two arrays rather then between the cards. The time I could see using two cards, is if there were more disks on the card channels, where scsi bus saturation comes into play.
