Dell precision 5600 cpu upgrade or not
Hi,
The Dell precision 5600 I just bought came with a single 8 core e5-2660 cpu and heatsink. (32gb ram, ssd) I added a 6gb gpu and the system is already much faster at calculationing photogrammetry info than before. The photogrammetry software uses the cpu for the primary calculations and then the gpu for the secondary calculations.
My question is would it be useful to add another CPU. If so why and which is the correct fan? (the unit has a 825w psu and the gpu uses 120w peak)

the big one looks like this, see all those fins ! 150watts it can do. (at the least, but dell has no real spec)

all came new with 2 CPU, its and option,
the reason to upgrade bios is to gain more CPU support.
the PC is old but intel made CPU newer far after dell tested them, (timing is thing here, )
that is why we say, upgrade bios , to allow the PC to run newer DDR, and newer CPU.
see? Dell (all OEM)and all BIOS makers call this a microcode update, for sure running pairs !!!
the DDR has strict limits too and matched sets. per the service guide.

that is a problem with DELL PCs (first is always look at your HEATSINK tags first, D:P/N
parts lists. for sure heat sink sold, for one model.
the dell spec page clearly shows up to 150 watt support but fails to say if that is 2 or 3 heatsinks sold.
one way to beat dell at there game (no parts lists)
is ebay see what is sold there. I see
9YYVV (looks small)and
01TD00 (huge look)my guess, is above 95watts (a common dell limit) buy the big HS above 1TD00

Id call them and ask what they support, CPU core wise and CPU counts. core should be unlimited, IDK.
but counts. hummmmmm, I'd ask them first, there answer may be , needs upgrade too.

Yes its a T5600
As far as I know the system only supports up to an 8 core cpu. Preferred as a matched pair.
I have 4 x 8gb eec so I can move two the new cpu.
The bios as I remember is A18. I dont know if that supports 2 x cpu or not
From what I have read there are two types of heatsink for the T5600, I cant see which fan is currently installed or whether I would need to change it out to install two new heatsink for higher Htz CPU x 2

you have vast way to up grade, both 1 CPU and DUAL, the DUAL must be the same CPU and even same INTEL stepping code, if wise.
if you go DUAL, you need 2nd bank of RAM, did you figure on that? 8 slots 4 per CPU,
to upgrade any CPU one upgrades BIOS first.
there are basically 2 limits, the DELL limits(bios /clocks/bandwidths allowed) and Chipset.C600 series
602 to 608 (sata port counts are the diffr) I guess at C602(seen here for just that ) and V2? IDK
that application may not support 8 cores x2. talk to them yet on what it allows? (dell doesn't list 10 cores)
and the dell publishes spec, page clearly shows. (1st google hit)
the C600 is wrong below. as C600 is series and Dell leaves that out of the spec. C602 supports these
one can look what 1700 others did here, benched.!~ one guy there with 10 core running, (page1) lots of pages I did not read.
sadly c60x ( dell fails to disclose what X is) I run HWinfo32.exe to learn what REALLY is there step 1. always.
this is in the DELL book, for sure, called spec.
