Precision 5820, replacing HD, where is Windows 10 license then?

I have some Precision 5820 Towers which have spinning disks and are incredibly slow despite being previously upgraded to 32GB RAM.  These were here before I arrived, if these came with paper licenses, Windows 10 DVD discs, I have not yet located them.  They each have a SATA 1TB spinner in a front modular drive bay.  I would like to purchase SSD SATAs to get more useful life from these units.

Where is the Windows 10 license/key if I remove the only disk, the spinning disk, and install a new SATA SSD?  Is the license in the TMP chip or the BIOS or on that spinning hard drive.  I want to ensure these PCs are recognized by Microsoft as "Activated" before returning them to production.

Thanks.

if the unit came from Dell factory with Win 10 preinstalled, your new ssd with new Win 10 clean install will automatically activate once pc is connected to internet.  It will be the same edition of Win 10 as Dell preinstalled OS, home vs pro.  the license is oem and not retail COA.

The license for your workstation is embedded on the motherboard.  It can be recognized by Windows installation and will automatically select the correct version during installation process.  However, if your workstation is shipped with Windows Pro for Workstation, then a common installation disc may not recognize the license key as Pro for Workstation version also being differentiate between version of up to 4-core and version for 6-core or more.  In that case, you would need the system restore image or just cloning from the current boot drive.  Check your Windows version before proceeding with storage media upgrade.

The easiest option for you is to creating an installation USB drive from Windows Creation Tool.  Use it to perform a clean install of Windows 10 Pro (select I don't have a key and manually select Win 10 Pro).

When the installation is done and after connecting to internet, the activation will fail.  Select activation troubleshooting, you will receive a message that MS found a different license and offers you to use it.  Select it and it would download an update and unlocked Windows Pro for Workstation.  Checking the status again until you see the license status is active for Windows 10 Pro for Workstation.

 Hi @Chino de Oro ,

Is Win10 Pro for Workstations different from Win10 Pro?  Win10 Pro reinstallation earlier this year went without any problems on my 3620.

Greetings Brad, yes, Win 10/11 Pro for Workstation is different from Win 10/11 Pro.  There are added features that would increase the performance and reliability of the high-end workstations.  The main features are:

*  ReFS or Resilient file system, provides cloud grade resiliency with fault-tolerant storage spaces.  It can manage and protect very large data volumes.

*  Persistent memory, using NVDIMM-N will enable users to read and write files with the fastest speed possible.  And, the files will still be there even when the workstation is switched off.

*  Faster file sharing, featuring SMB direct to support RDMA network adapters.  Allowing network access at full speed with very low latency and low CPU usage.

*  Hardware performance, supports up to 4 server grade CPUs with Ultra High Performance settings.  Translating to the access of a massive 6 TB memory configuration.

what is the proper word for different class of Windows OS.  home vs pro vs workstation etc.  version seems to mean update within each class.

@Chino de Oro Thanks Chino and redxps630, great info here.

BTW, our environment is sorta like a manufacturing environment, there is no access to the internet, internal corp access is very limited, like accounting, HR doesn't have applications on this side.

Seemingly all of these desktops here are Pro for Workstations according to wsus and a sampling of systems by viewing in settings>system>about.

Looking at the service tag specs on dell.com, it says it was ordered with it.

but is also says it wasn't shipped with media, which seems to be the answer why I've never seen a pro for workstations disc anywhere.

620-AALW : OS-Windows Media Not Included
619-AMUB : Windows 10 Pro for Workstation s (up to 4 Cores) Multi - Engl ish, French, Spanish

Is there a way to get Windows 10 pro for workstations media from Dell or MS.  I see that there is the media creation tool, but I seem to be understanding that it doesn't do pro for workstations?

Thanks.

Thanks Chino.

I'm curious and I have a side question.  Most of the systems here are Pro for Workstations.  They also are full of Xeon systems here (the system in question is a Xeon W-2125), do Xeon, even though this is only 4 core and 32GB ram, have something to them that MS forces the use of Pro for Workstations.  I've looked into the the Pro for Workstations add'l features and I do not believe we are using a single advanced feature contained by Pro for Workstations.

No, it was customer choices.  Dell only offers the option at purchase configurations and business customers often just select Windows Pro for Workstations.  Purchase rep would select the best option regardless if they will utilize all the features or none of.  It's still good to know that the capability is there.
