RTX 5090 FE in Precision 3680

A tight but best fit, allowing me to also keep my Thunderbolt card. For safety- upgraded the PSU to Dell 1350 PSU (See https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/1468q26/dissecting_the_1350w_r15_psu_into_a_r13/).

Great! A couple of questions:

- Did you use the stock 4x 8-pin to 12vhpwr cable for the GPU (the one provided with the 5090?)

- Could you confirm that the power supply you used is P/N 74HMF

Thanks!!

Yes-I used the power cable that came with the 5090 FE. It’s specially angled as you know and allows the side panel of the computer to close without compressing it and was a real thoughtful innovation by nVidia. I don’t know if there other third party cables that would fit the FE. Seems to be fine so far and no burning.

And yes to the second question. That’s the part number. IT HAS THE 4 separate connections for the 5090 and is perfect for that. But when you connect the PSU to the mother board one pin is extra and that’s ok as one will be sticking out. But unlike in the XPS 8950 where I had tried it first, here in the Precision 3680 there is a capacitor very close to the pins on the motherboard and I had to shave off a portion of the plastic sheath over the last connector (which does not fit into the pin on the motherboard and does not affect function) so be aware of that and do not try to force it in and cause damage to that capacitor which is really close to the pins. Good luck!

I am still waiting to see if the case is enough for all the heat that’s inside and I am not a gamer but when I tried MS Flight simulator temps quickly rise. So the setup is not ideal since I think a larger case would be best for airflow.

BTW- I bought the PSU from eBay. See link.

Close up of the power connector.

Here's the cutaway showing where the PSU harness plugs into the Precision 3680 Motherboard, and where the capacitor is located so close to it. The plastic sheath on the last pin from the PSU wiring has to be shaved off a little to avoid damaging this capacitor as you plug that harness onto the Precision's MB.

Looks like a larger version of a 5090 might fit in there do you think? I ask because I have a 3680 I'd like to fit a 5090 into, but the founders edition cards are all gone.

All the Partner Boards are larger in size and may not fit in the space, and even if they do, airflow for cooling may be suboptimal.
