Alert! Service Mode Jumper is installed
I'm hoping someone can help me. I recently purchased a precision 7710 and I just got it to boot to bios but the cup and graphics card info don't show on the bios and I am getting a non dell battery error. In the logs it shows a message saying alert! Service mode jumper is set. Is there anyone who can tell me where I can find the service mode jumper and, hopefully, if the battery and cpu/graphics info are related to the alert.

Also, when I took it completely apart a small screw fell out of the case. Perhaps that's what was causing the alert message because, now that it's back together, the alert is now gone. I think that the missing cpu and graphics card information on the bios is due to the fact that they are engineering samples not because of some switch. The battery error likely means that I have a bad battery. Problem solved! Now, should I replace the motherboard and graphics card or should I simply restore it to the rare beauty that she is?

The issues could be related -- but if this was a used purchase, returning it for a refund is likely the best option.
This model does carry a removeable video card - the only way to know what's going on inside is to open it up and check --but see above; return for refund is a better idea.

Thanks, unfortunately I wouldn't be able to return it be cause it was purchased as a parts machine. I'm wondering if it might be a pre production model, the palmrest is slightly different than other palmrests I've seen, also, the motherboard has a couple jumpers and switches that don't seem to be on other motherboards with the same part number. I hate to take it apart again but I suppose I'll have to to find the jumper/switch that will help. I saw that other Dell's have had this message but they were Opteron desktops. Thanks again.

Well, I'm pretty certain that it's a pre production motherboard now. Although I haven't been able to find the appropriate jumper I did find out that the graphics card says qual sample on the chip. I'm pretty certain that would never find its way into a production system.
