Dell Precision 5550 shuts down unexpectedly at 30–40% battery

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a used Dell Precision 5550, and I’m having a strange battery issue.

Here are the symptoms:

Dell SupportAssist reports the battery health as Excellent.
Battery report:
- Design Capacity: 84,292 mWh
- Full Charge Capacity: 78,569 mWh (about 93% of the original capacity)
Dell SupportAssist diagnostics say the battery passed all tests.
I updated the BIOS, Windows, and all Dell drivers.
However, the laptop sometimes shuts down suddenly at around 30–40% battery (sometimes between 20–30%).
Windows never shows a low battery warning before shutting down. I set the low battery warning to 35% and the critical battery level to 20% (Hibernate), but the laptop still powers off instantly without any warning or entering hibernation.
After I plug in the charger and turn it back on, Windows usually shows the battery at 1%.
I also ran a battery report, and nothing obvious looks wrong.

The laptop was not used for about 18 days, and the seller told me the battery might just need a few charge/discharge cycles.

My questions:

Could this still be a bad battery even though it reports 93% health and passes Dell diagnostics?
Could this be a battery calibration issue or a faulty Battery Management System (BMS)?
Has anyone experienced the same issue with a Dell Precision 5550?

Maybe the reason it was for sale was because of this problem?

It is possible there is a problem with the main board.

Can you return the device for a refund?

Get the seller to provide a replacement battery?

A good first choice is the 86 Wh 6-cell battery if your chassis currently has that size installed or if you want maximum runtime.

Possibly issues with a 5550 - The most likely culprits from the reports are the USB-C power delivery path, mainboard/power circuitry, or a worn battery rather than just a bad charger. On older or heavily used systems, battery wear can be severe enough to cause low runtime or shutdown issues even when the battery still reports as present.

Unfortunately I don't have any good news.

1.  Yes.  One or more weak cells may take a charge but not hold it. 2.  Unlikely. 3.  If the battery is original to the system, it's six years old so the need for a replacement isn't unexpected.

The laptop just shuts down instantly with no warning, and after I plug in the charger and turn it back on, it shows 1% battery. I thought Windows should at least warn me or enter hibernation before shutting down.

If one or two cells is faulty, it can discharge rapidly - faster than any software can report it. Again, if the battery is original to the system, it's well past its expected lifespan. If your seller provides a battery warranty, have the battery replaced. Or if the system is a recent purchase, return it for a refund.

You can pretty much expect any system more than 3-4 years old to need a new battery sooner rather than later.

@ejn63​ The laptop still lasts about 2 to 2.5 hours on battery. Based on the symptoms, do you think replacing the battery would most likely solve the problem? Or could it still be caused by something else, like the motherboard, power circuitry, or USB-C power delivery? I’m trying to figure out if changing the battery is enough before spending money on it.

Unless the same problem occurs when the system is on AC power, it's highly unlikely the adapter or the mainboard is the issue. You never answered the question as to the age of the battery, but assuming it's original to the system and therefore about six years old, it's overdue for replacement anyway.

@ejn63​ I’m not sure if the battery is original or not because I bought the laptop used. The laptop itself is out of Dell warranty. I contacted the seller, but they keep telling me the battery and the laptop are fine, and the only thing they’re willing to replace is the charger. That’s why I’m trying to find the real cause before spending money or arguing with the seller.

If a true Dell OEM battery, it should have a white sticker on the label showing the Dell 5 digit part number and the 20 digit serial number. Using that we could find out how old it is =

From my experience (with 3 different new original batteries, and all 3 behaving the same way on both xx50 and xx40 models) — if I didn't use the laptop for a long time, or if I had Dell Power Manager configured so that the battery sat at a constant charge for a long period, the exact same thing would happen to me as what you're experiencing. There were at least 2 solutions: Recalibrate the battery: Discharge it until the laptop shuts down, and then charge it uninterrupted to 100%. Stop using Windows: I didn't have this issue on Linux.
